Adventures in Babysitting (Blu-ray)
9 September 2012
Excerpt: By the time Chris Columbus made his 1987 directorial debut at the tender age of 29, he was no stranger to Hollywood. In three short years, he had sold four scripts, all becoming major studio releases— Reckless , Gremlins , The Goonies , and Young Sherlock Holmes —three of which are now revered as cult classics. It's not surprising then his first film behind the camera would possess some of that same magic.
Summary: Before his blockbuster collaborations with John Hughes and his inauguration of the Harry Potter franchise, Chris Columbus began his directorial career with Adventures in Babysitting, which is still many viewers' favorite Elisabeth Shue movie. Watched today in light of the subsequent partnership between Columbus and Hughes on the Home Alone films, Babysitting feels like it should have been a Hughes film, even though the idea had been kicking around Hollywood long before...
Conclusion: Starring Elizabeth Shue, 'Adventures in Babysitting' remains a fun and amusing 100-minute adventure for the whole family. With Christopher Columbus at the helm, the 80s teen comedy delivers a great balance of lighthearted humor and some mild edginess pushing the action forward. The Blu-ray arrives with very a good audio and video presentation, but offers nothing in the way of special features.
