Summary: This BD-S693 replaced my older DVD player. This was a good choice. At FIRST, that is. Then things rapidly went to hell in a hand basket. Set up was fairly straightforward. The remote is not overly loaded, so you can understand every button. The USB plug is good for watching your home videos or photos. When we have family events here, I take pictures.
Summary: Like a few others here, I ignored the bad reviews thinking Yamaha simply couldn't make a product this poor. Boy, was I ever wrong. Both the remote and the buttons on the unit are unresponsive, you have to press them multiple times to get to where you want to go. The power button on the remote almost never works (yes I put new batteries in it), and on the unit, when it does respond, it sometimes powers back on without having pushed it a second time.
Summary: Unfortunately this blu-ray player was bad right out of the box. The unit would not power on until after I would pull and reconnect the power cord. And then the unit would freeze during playback and would not respond to remote commands or any buttons pressed on the unit. Yamaha will be exchanging the unit so hopefully these problems will not reoccur. Update- Still having the same problems with the replacement.
Summary: I was thinking because there is a New Firmware Update dated: 2/25/13 I would take a chance and get this unit to match a RX-V673 receiver I bought for a friend. WRONG...it still Hangs while trying to turn the unit off after watching a movie! Also...everythime you go to Yamaha's Website and want to look at an Owners manual or Download a file...it asks you to log into either your Yamaha account or Google etc??? I wont buy another Yamaha prouduct just because of this!
Summary: I bought the previous version of this (the 671) 13 months ago - it never worked well, and then died 1 month out of warranty. Both video and audio quality were mediocre for a $300 player, and reliability was obviously poor. Yamaha used to make superior audio components that were worth the extra money they charged. Not any more - buy something cheaper or buy from a company that still makes high end equipment.
