Michael Fabry, Amazon
26 December 2012
Summary: This player has a lot of nice features but will not play all blue-rays if the disc has any interactive features even if you don't select them you get this error message, not enough local memory .you can select ignore but then the movie will. Only play about 20 minutes .read the manual plugged in a thumb drive, checked soft ware still won't work .sony makes great products and I've got a lot of them but there customer service is the industry worst .trying to contact amazons...
Summary: I purchased this product as a replacement for an older Panasonic unit because it would connect to the Internet, it had generally good reviews and the Sony brand. I connected the unit to my amplifier with HMDI cables using the BD connection on my amplifier that I had used with the previous machine. When I tried to play a disc, to my amazement, it wouldn't play. Instead it would only show the title page of the movie for few minutes and then nothing but a black screen.
Summary: I NEVER write reviews on here but I felt compelled to do so after having 2 of these units within a 2 month period. These things weight 3 pounds and the construction makes it show. FIrst one I got out of the box was a loud humming noise due to poor parts and housing of the unit. Got the same unit back. All good until about 2 months later, doing the same thing now. These things are so poorly made it's hard to believe they "pass" whatever standards there are if any.
Summary: Well it worked fine till I did the updates . Once I did them , a "Wait" message appeared on the unit . Would not power off . Call Customer Service , No help , they had me mail back to Sony for a factory recondition one . Had the player for 36 days, 6 days past the 30 day return policy for amazon so refund was out of the question . I'll see how the next one works once I get it .
A good DVD/blu-ray player - not a very good streamer
23 August 2012
Summary: Wanted a all-in-one unit that does DVDs/Blu-ray and streaming. DVDs and Blu-rays look good. The wireless streaming works fine as far as the connection. Setup was easy and it connected to our wireless network no problem - just had to enter the security password/code. Issues: 1. One thing that doesn't work is thru DLNA streaming it doesn't play AVI files. That is frustrating! They are from our digital camera. 2.
Summary: I needed a new dvd player so why not replace the roku too? So I set this new player exactly where my old roku used to be (and soon to be again) Old roku would buffer once in a great while this player buffers as much as it plays, even put in a wifi extender!...and yes upated the unit....painfully poor wifi performance my belkin N wifi router is only 30ft away one room away and within line of sight with door open.
Summary: I am comparing three players for you, Panasonic DMP-BDT210, Panasonic DMP-BDT220, and Sony BDP-S590. For all 3 players, everything worked great on each- picture and sound are fantastic, and all the menus are very intuitive. The up-conversion for DVD's to 1080p produced excellent pictures on all 3 - not as sharp as Blu-ray, but still much better than my old DVD player.
Summary: We've had a number of problems with this unit: would not turn on or off without plugging in/unplugging (seriously), bad wi-fi reception, and freezes. A friend of a friend checked it out and said the hardware was okay, but we had received a crummy operating system. He fixed it, and now it works fine, but I can't recommend it. Load time is fair.
Summary: I bought this bdp-s590 in hopes that since it was updated, it would be better and less buggy than the s380 I already own. It is not. Pros: -Plays a dvd. I did not bother trying a bluray or 3d, but I will assume it plays them. -Does have a wide variety of apps. Cons: -The netflix app will not take input, so I can't enter my username. All of the other apps work fine and take input, with the exception of the browser, see below.
