Summary: The BDP-S580 is a budget Blu-Ray player, and as such, it does what it's supposed to do very well, and is equipped with the several important features. First and most importantly, it plays Blu-Rays with picture and audio quality comparable to a Sony PS3 (my personal reference point).
Pros: Excellent picture and sound quality, networkable, streams from key services
Cons: Limited control of audio output, does not play AAC codec
Summary: The good: This unit does well when it comes to playing discs, files from an attached hard drive, and even most of the streaming services. It streams YouTube, Hulu Plus, and others with no problems. The bad: This unit has big problems streaming Netflix.
Summary: Be aware that the firmware M07.R.0615 that your S580 may want you to upgrade to includes Cinavia, a water marking technology that restricts playback options on your player (Sony describes it as a benefit/improvement...for whom? Their pocketbooks perhaps).
Summary: The Sony BDP-S580 is replacing my old slow giant S300. My old one took minutes just to turn on, minutes to load a bluray, and a good minute just to open the tray!!! Now for the BDP-S580: It starts up almost instantly in the fast start up mode. (uses more electricity...
Summary: If you are planning to use this for Netflix, don't - get a LG or a Roku box. The player re-buffers so often during a program making it unwatchable. A Google search will tell you that there are many unhappy people out there. I'll probably see if I could still return it.
Summary: This is my first Blu Ray player ever. I had researched on numerous brands and makes before I purchased the Sony S580. I had opted for the Sony S580 because of the brand name, affordability and built in WI FI. Overall I am not disappointed with the purchase. Set up was easy.
Summary: This was my first Blu-ray player. I have it connected to my home network and the internet and am amazed at all of the things I can do with it beyond playing disks. So happy with it that I bought a second one !
Summary: Have not yet played a commercial blueray disc, so I cannot comment on playback ability. I use this primarily as a DLNA media player. This unit provides the necessary wireless (built-in)connection to my media server.
Summary: I just bought this bluray player for my girlfriend and she absolutely loves it. I currently have the 570(older model of this one) and I think it's great. Both are extremely user friendly and put out a great quality picture!
Summary: This is a very nice unit. I don't know if I will ever use the 3D option. But I do like the apps. I also like that you can use a computer Keyboard with this unit. Typing with the remote is a pain in the butt. Also if the apps and the unit won't update.
