Summary: Netflix and Amazon prime are unwatchable with this device. They pause for rebuffering every couple of minutes. The issue is clearly well documented on the sony boards, but the only apparent answer sony has is "it's your internet's fault." No, sorry, not when every single other device in the house (phones, laptops, roku) are all capable of streaming the same program at the same time without any hitches.
Pros: Built-in wifi
Cons: Netflix and amazon prime are impossible to use because of poor playback
Summary: The BDP-S580 is a budget Blu-Ray player, and as such, it does what it's supposed to do very well, and is equipped with the several important features. First and most importantly, it plays Blu-Rays with picture and audio quality comparable to a Sony PS3 (my personal reference point). (Please note that I have never watched DVDs on the S580 and therefore cannot judge its upscaling quality.
Pros: Excellent picture and sound quality, networkable, streams from key services
Cons: Limited control of audio output, does not play AAC codec
The pausing & buffering issue is VERY REAL, DO NOT BUY!

Summary: My girlfriend received two blu-ray players for Christmas. One was a Samsung and the other was the Sony BDP-S185. Despite reading your review, we returned the Samsung and used that money towards a better TV. Unfortunately, we experienced the same pausing and buffering issue while watching Sons of Anarchy via the Netflix streaming feature.
Pros: Sleek styling.
Cons: Constant pausing and buffering while watching netflix.
Summary: I love this Blu-ray player. It came with built-in wifi which made streaming netflix a breeze. Little did I know that literally a day after the warrenty expired, the built-in wifi stopped working. After 4 hours with Sony Service, they finally admitted the wifi was no longer working and that it would cost $120 to repair. They also hinted that the built-in wifi wasn't for long term use. I'm not sure I can trust Sony again...
Summary: I purchased a Sony because I already own a Sony Bravia HDTV. My biggest issue with this dvd player was that it refused to work with my Sony TV via HDMI cable. I tried for hours to figure out why it wouldnt work. I updated firmware on dvd player and firmware on TV as well. I was able to use composite cable but the video quality wasnt the best and so I took it back. I ended up getting a Samsung dvd player and it worked perfectly with the HDMI cable.
Summary: I used "in store pickup" to purchase this Blu-Ray player to replace my current LG. It was a snap to set up. I have less than good DSL internet accesses so I don't bother with WiFi and just plugged in a cable from my router. I do believe that streaming NetFlex movies come in better than with my previous Blu-Ray player. There are many many streaming options available including Hulu and Amazon.
Summary: Took like five mins to hook this up and have everything up and running. Loads quicker then my previous BD player, and the remote is bout half the size. I have had 0 problems with this. I have seen ppl saying it is hard to setep etc. Not true very easy to set up as long as you can read. To get netflix, pandora and other paid services you will be back and forth betwen player and comp, but once again easy and qucik!!!!
Summary: Bought as a birthday present for my husband. I don't know much about electronics, I knew I wanted BluRay with apps. Set up was easy. Configuring the player was easy. The hardest part was signing up for Netflix, which was a breeze. So far, it seems like a great DVD player. The price wasn't too bad at $109.
Summary: Would not own any other brand. Sony Blu-Ray player is easy to use and has the best quality picture. Highly recommend to anyone. Even though I have had this player a short time, I owned one before, same comments.
