Summary: Works fine except 5.1 sound via hdmi not passed through my LG TV via optical out to my Sony receiver, as my other components do. Talked to Sony tech support three times with no solution. Eventually ran digital coax (optical not available) to my receiver to get 5.1; less convenient but works, so I kept it.
Summary: The remote does not work very well when you are at a comfortable viewing distance from a 50 inch TV. You have to stand up and walk towards the unit to have the command recognized by the DVD player reliably. The operation distance seems to be less than 10 feet. It seems this unit would be better suited to smaller screen sizes where you would be sitting closer. Other than the remote range, the unit performed well.
Picture quality, very good; extremely bad menu navigation

Summary: The Sony BDP-S5100 plays BR, DVD, CD and USB content of any code or region very well. The display settings and menu options, however, are very bad. One particularly annoying problem arises when you need to find menu items in long queues, such as in Netflix, or a collection in a USB attached device or through a network connection, within a reasonable time.
Pros: This player works well when it works. It plays netflix well.
Cons: It is agonizingly slow. You will sit there and wait for netflix to load. It also locks up a lot. Also I use an external usb player for movies. Many times when I try to watch a movie it will say "no available video'. It has done this two times today.
Summary: I had a Sony BDP-S590 3D Blu-Ray Player, but my big puppy jumped on me and I fell hitting the open disc tray with my shoulder. I tried opening up the unit to see if it was something I could fix; unfortunately, I found a large white gear broken in half. The BDP S590 was history. In the process, I had also discovered that the Sony BDP-S590 was built like crap. Its innards are just cheap.
Summary: The reason I liked my other DVD player was because I could connect my headphones to an audio output. That way I would not disturb anyone else. The wireless connection and over all function of this DVD player is great but Sony must be idiots not to have the headphone connection. I cannot connect to my receiver and can connect to my Uverse box for TV but not DVD player. Sound crazy, but will return based on that one thing.
Summary: Overall this is a very nice DVD player but I cannot believe Sony left off the audio connect. Now I cannot connect my headphones which I need to not bother others in the home. My other DVD player has it so why was it left off this player. I am going to have to return it just because of that one feature not being there. Shame on you Sony.
Summary: I love the Discover Sony Entertainment Network, but these great options just keep disappearing from the network menu. I returned it the first time, and now with the second blue ray these great options disappeared again, The help online has steps that do not work to fix the problem.
