Buggy Firmware / Features dont work / Noisy when playing DVD
20 June 2014
Summary: Bought this for my 3D Tv after reading reviews. Got it on sale for just over $100, but this Chinese junk should have been more like $20. To be fair, it works great as a 3D Bluray player, but fails on everything else. The streaming features are buggy and constantly freeze and have to shut down. Several times it has lost my settings for Network, Amazon, and Netflix. When streaming movies, the player goes into sleep mode with a black screen and bluray symbol.
Pros: Bluray 3D
Cons: Streaming features buggy / Loses settings / Freezes on features / Slow to boot
Summary: I was fortunate to have found this unit of Amazon at a ridiculously low price, considering the average cost of this Sony model plus the modification that converts it into an all-region player. The machine does everything it's supposed to, playing foreign and domestic discs flawlessly...though when the player arrived it fell far short of that.
Summary: First off, DO NOT do any firmware updates unless specifically told to do so by the company that made this player multi-region. The player worked for me as advertised. Plays both Region B and Region 2 discs, Make sure you find the little cheat sheet that is packed in the box for changing regions. I did a firmware update, which caused the player to completely loose SD multi-region function. Blu-Ray Region B still played.
Summary: I'm writing this review to help customers, like me, who could't watch foreign DVDs from Region 2, 3, 4 etc...since last week. The S-5100 asked for an update of firmware, I accepted, and it returned as normal Region 1 player. I called the seller (Bombay Electronics, nice guys btw) and he sent me the link for the new FW. I burned it and voilà..it now works.
Summary: BDP-S5100 Multi Region Blu Ray Player: I bought this player in Dec 2013, and am completely satisfied with it - easy to use, great performance, easily earns a 5* rating. I am sorry to see all the inaccurate information here, especially in the 1* reviews. Apparently, many people do not understand what this product is. This is a standard Sony player that has had firmware and hardware modifications by a third party to add functions.
Summary: Shipped quickly. Easy to set up. I prefer Panasonic products but this Sony set up easily. I popped in one of m y favorite Region 2 DVD's and everything worked perfectly. I don't do on-line downloads, but as I noted, everything set up easily so I think streaming would work well. Thanks Bombay Electronics.
Excerpt: The retail video market is now flooded with blue-ray discs. DVDs are getting less readily available, except on online retail stores. Therefore, I would suggest that if you do not have a blue-ray player now, then you are missing out on a lot.
Summary: The player says that it will automatically switch between regions. Wrong; manual switching only. The operating manual says nothing about multi-region operations; a mimeographed supplemental sheet provides instructions for that. The player automatically looks for firmware updates, but the mimeographed supplemental sheet says to ignore them (oops) at the very end of the full page troubleshooting guide (oops, again).
