Summary: I HAVE OWNED THIS UNIT FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND 1/2 NOW AND KNOW OF TWO OTHERS IN OPERATION FOR ABOUT THE SAME DURATION. THE UNIT IS SLOW TO LOAD, I'LL HAVE TO GIVE THE OTHER COMPLAINERS THAT, BUT ONCE YOU GET OVER THE INITIAL WAIT PERIOD, (GO DO SOMETHING ELSE UNTIL THE BEAST IS READY) THE OUTPUT IS FANTASTIC, BOTH BLU RAY AND STANDARD DVD UPSCALED.
Summary: I'd like to say that this is a fantastic Blu-Ray DVD player, but I can only say that it's good. This is because I faught almost a year with it till the new firmware (Java) update came out. Before the update, you didn't know from one day to the next if a DVD (Blu-Ray or standard) would play or what features (fast forward, skip, Top Menu etc.) would work on any given DVD - what worked one day would not work the next.
Summary: Actually purchased blu-ray player with sony card reward points. Worked fine without any issues, until recently. Player would shut down once movies started from the menu screen and was a compatibility issue with new blu-ray disc versions and the DTS-HD. Went to blu-ray.com website to download firmware upgrade for the BDP-S500 and works like a charm now.
Summary: I have had this player for about a week now. I was vacillating between the S500 and the S350, but after reading countless reviews, I decided to go with the newest model hoping that Sony was able to work out all the kinks and bugs that came with the previous units. I have tested this player with a few movies (Spiderman 3, Full Metal Jacket, and the Planet Earth series), and fortunately, I have not run into any of the problems that other users have encountered (i.e.
Summary: I purchased this player along with a KDL-46XBR Sony tv. The combination is quite wonderful. My initial review was shortly after purchase, and now I've had the unit about four months. I'm still very pleased with the unit's performance. I have upgraded firmware once in that time period and found the instructions from Sony were reasonably complete and the process was pretty painless.
Summary: I purchased this disk player because I wanted a mid priced Sony BluRay player to match my Sony HD LCD and A/V receiver to insure compatibility. It worked great right out of the box. I did review the Sony support site prior to the purchase and did the firmware upgrade prior to using it for the first time. I have had ZERO problems with reading BluRay, DVD and CD's.
