BDP-S300 Absolute Junk - SONY is my new four letter word

Excerpt: The picture on this Blu-Ray player is beautiful, when it can play a Blu-Ray disc. I never have trouble with regular DVD's, but I can have trouble with my existing Blu-Ray collection. It also is not just newer Blu-rays. I rent 3 discs at a time from Netflix. I can have trouble with a Blu-ray released in 2008, but no trouble with the disc released 1 month ago. At first I thought it was the quality of the rental disc.
Excerpt: This is one of, if not, the first Blu-Ray players Sony came out with. I always believe that it's not the smartest idea in the world to be an early adopter of technology and this is the perfect product to prove my point. The good qualities of this machine is that it has amazing picture quality. Now for the cons. Unless you upgrade the firmware on the machine, it does not play half the Blu-Ray discs on the market. For a novice, upgrading firmware is a daunting task.
Summary: sony always good but i don't know their this blu ray player.i upgrade this almost 5times but still cannot play morden disc.why spent $300 for something that i cannot use.anytime i see it i get mad.sony needs to refound some of our money.but hey, i still like sony products.i will try their new blu ray players.thanks

Summary: After constantly downloading firmware every 24 days (search, locate, follow complicated instructions, download, burn image to disk - not easy to do - load in player, wait 30 minutes for it to work, adjust settings... then you can watch your movie. But you won't know that you need to do this until after you get your movie, make popcorn, put the kids to bed, grab a beer... all of a sudden... you've got problems.
Summary: I bought this several years ago when the HD/Blue Ray wars ended. I purchased several Blue Ray discs and was content with the initial viewing. Although it was unconscionably slow in loading - or even opening the DVD tray - the viewing was crisp, clear and very exciting to watch. Then I purchased something else - and it wouldn't play. I had to update the firmware.
Summary: As everyone else has stated, this unit is SLOW. But in case you didn't get the hint, here's one more review for you. I couldn't be more disappointed as to how long it takes to power up, its slow response to the remote and reading a dvd. I have a Harmony remote with a "Movietime" activity. I push my button, the TV and receiver pops on, the lights go out and... ... ... ... we sit in darkness for 2+ minutes. Comical really...
Summary: I've always thought Sony was over rated and this just reinforced that thought. When this thing works the picture is great but it's so unstable, it takes 3-5 to load up any Blu Rays. Regular DVD usually work fine and look great but if there's the slightest smudge or scratch -you'll have problems where regular DVD players don't.
Summary: Let me say this: It's slow, slow, slow!!! It will get stuck only for you to have to restart it from the begining, so wait an aditional 10 min. every time. My advice, wait till you can afford a decent one.
Summary: bought one from sony last week. wouldnt play the new bluray live dvds. after 5 phone calls and 2 updates the admitted in will never be able to play the newer formated discs.i can return for credit if i pay the shipping costs.
