BDP-S300 Absolute Junk - SONY is my new four letter word

dannys58, Viewpoints

  • Excerpt: The picture on this Blu-Ray player is beautiful, when it can play a Blu-Ray disc.  I never have trouble with regular DVD's, but I can have trouble with my existing Blu-Ray collection.  It also is not just newer Blu-rays.  I rent 3 discs at a time from Netflix.  I can have trouble with a Blu-ray released in 2008, but no trouble with the disc released 1 month ago.  At first I thought it was the quality of the rental disc.

Unpolished and slow

  • Excerpt: This is one of, if not, the first Blu-Ray players Sony came out with. I always believe that it's not the smartest idea in the world to be an early adopter of technology and this is the perfect product to prove my point. The good qualities of this machine is that it has amazing picture quality. Now for the cons. Unless you upgrade the firmware on the machine, it does not play half the Blu-Ray discs on the market. For a novice, upgrading firmware is a daunting task.

"Don't buy it"

augietoo, CNET
29 April 2010
  • Pros: It only looks pretty
  • Cons: Purchased for $399.99 2 yrs ago. Watched 3 movies. Purchased Avatar, won't play, keeps loading. Called Sony support, told to update firmware. Still can't watch the movie. Took to local service center, needs new drive, cost 150.00 + to repair.

"DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL OR ANY OTHER SONY BLURAY!"

cubsdyk22, CNET
29 March 2010
  • Pros: it might work fine for a year, MAYBE
  • Cons: They are a piece of junk and sony doesn't care one bit. I've had mine for maybe 18 months and got the NO DISC error. It won't let me upgrade the firmware and the tech support doesn't know anything. Total waste of money.

"Novelty Doorstop"

CNET
11 October 2009
  • Pros: Quality you'd expect from BlueRay on most BlueRay disks.
  • Cons: Crashes and freezes for some BlueRay disks. When watching DVDs, they produce flickering white pixels and pops and green flickers erratically, rendering movies virtually unwatchable.

"I'd rather go back to a VHS player than buy this again."

markegan, CNET
18 July 2009
  • Pros: I don't think there are any. If you have a Bravia, it gives you another remote.
  • Cons: This thing is trash. You'll have PAINFULLY slow load times. The firmware update I had to get via mail, was a complete disaster. Lost a complete day. Get something else.
