3 More BD 4 U: Three second-gen Blu-ray players. Hot on the heels of the first, and almost universally lame, generation of Blu-ray players, here's generation II. In the case of two of these players, the big news is a substantial reduction in price. Both are less than half of their predecessors. In the case of the other, the news is its fancy HQV processing, the same that's found in the excellent Toshiba HD-XA2. Read more
The first thing you will notice about the BDP-S300, Sony's second generation Blu-Ray DVD player, is that the list price is substantially lower than the first generation model. The Sony BDP-S300 is obviously still much more expensive than most standard definition players, but is now more in line with the cost of competing HD DVD players. Read more
The BDP-S300 is a decent choice if you're limiting yourself to a relatively cheap, standard-design Blu-ray player, but everyone else should consider the competition. Read more
On a more positive note, the player offers 1080p output at a cinematic 24 frames-per-second, as well as up to eight channels of PCM audio from the HDMI socket. It also sports 5.1-channel analogue outputs and supports x.v.Colour, which offers an extended colour range for more accurate reproduction (though you'll need a TV with an HDMI v1.3 input). The BDP-S300 makes up for its lack of features with blistering hi-def picture performance. Read more

maybe this product will begin to work faster - with global warming... but in the meantime the effect is GLACIAL. Oh - MAC users, you "don't exist" as far as SONY customer service is concerned. Want an upgrade... it's SNAIL mail. Downloads for [some] Windows users only. Read more
I haven't had a Blu-ray player for that long as I felt that although the players had come down in price, the DVDs still seemed to be that bit more expensive. I wasn't keen to start changing my DVDs over, but I made the decision to buy a player and then purchase dvds on Blu-ray from then on as you only pay a little more for a disc in this way, or if you wait a couple of months before buying the disc then it does get cheaper. I work for the Computer Art Department at a large university in Manhattan. We bought this player to replace a broken DVD player in our presentation room, and have had to return it because of how SLOW it is. It takes upwards of 30 seconds for this player to start up. In that time you can't put the disc in, so you're looking at a minimum of one minute before you can get an image on screen. Compounding this problem is the lack of a "real" power switch. Read more
Very good product for the money. Well worth getting if you want to get the best picture from your large widescreen HDTV. Only downfalls are lack of ethernet connection for firmware updates and slow startup. Overall, good value and good product. Read more
