Summary: Got it as a Christmas present. I finally got around to setting it up" we had a baby born on Christmas eve so it wasn't a priority" and it wont play DVD's. Now I am stuck because I am out of the return window.
Summary: Do yourself a favor...and spend a few minutes searching 'Sony Netflix streaming problems'. Netflix is completely unwatchable on my Sony BDP-S185. Constant buffering freezes, 0.6 to 0.8 M download speed, horrible video quality. All this despite a 20+M internet connection at my house, verified with speedtest.net and other tests. Calls to Sony have them pointing the finger at your settings, your ISP, sunspots, anything and everything but their device. Well, gee, Sony..
Summary: Refurbished and seems like new but when you start using it, it just doesn't work! I guess maybe I was the unlucky one who received a bad unit. When I tried to return it, I was told that the 30 day return period had expired and all I could do was pay $15 each way for shipping for a repair! Very unhappy.
Summary: This unit is a piece of garbage. The first one I purchased wouldn't play DVDs or Blu-Rays--there was some kind of mechanical problem--so I had to exchange it. The one I have now plays discs properly, but the streaming is basically useless. I get constant error messages, long load times, and ridiculously slow or interrupted streaming (which makes no sense, as I get about 16 mbps). It's completely sporadic and maddening.
Summary: We like Sony products, always have. Unfortunately the Sony Blu Ray Player BDP-S185 is a negative exception. We bought it in Feb '12 and used it for about 8 months without any problems (streaming worked fine too). Then it just stopped turning on. Sometimes we could get it to turn on but not every time. I called Sony and they gave me an address to ship it back (paying my own shipping of course).
Summary: one year after buying this, it's having to be replaced. It rarely reads disks (bluray or DVD), it has constant "handshake" issues with other components that our other dvd and blu ray players haven't had, the butotns on the top of this Sony are "caving" in like they were installed improperly and are now sunk into the player making the remote the only way to control the device. Total crap. Do not waste your time.
Summary: Using this unit is unbearable. I am a big fan of streaming instant video, so I use Netflix, Amazon, Youtube, etc. I made the swap from a PS3, so I had a generally positive experience with Sony products, as well as their ability to stream content from the Internet. I ran a wired connection to the blu ray player, and have run network diagnostics tests a thousand times.
