Not ready for prime time

everyday man, Amazon
8 December 2008
  • Summary: Player has too many problems even after loading in the update discs. Things like: very slow startup, scan speed 1 usually works but forget 2 and 3, will just go into pause mode for no reason and you can't get it out without rebooting, etc. Very irritating machine, especially since it is relatively expensive.

Take a Wait-and-See Attitude

Joel L. Palmer "JP", Amazon

  • Summary: I am, as a rule, not one to buy first generations of any kind of product. I have a long history of owning problem-free Sony products, so I was willing to risk it with the BDP-S1 once I caught it on sale. Big mistake! While the picture quality is amazingly better than anything I've seen so far in a digital video format, the machine is glitchy as can be. Here's my thoughts: Pros: 1. Much better audio than with any player I've ever owned.

Eloquent designe, so so picture.

  • Summary: Sony BDP-S1 lacks the video processing of the newer model BR players. I've been watching standard DVD's and BR DVD's wondering what the heck happened to the picture compared to the BDP-S300. I was on the Sony site checking out the difference between the three available models. It turns out the 300 and 301 have a circuit called 24P True Cinema and the S1 doesn't. It not only makes a big difference in standard DVD's but also makes BR DVD's picture better as well.
