Was a gift - Heard it was good

J. R. Guzman, Amazon

  • Summary: Friends I gave this to are really liking it so I can't really say anything bad. It's hard to find a BluRay player w/ a component output since they don't make them anymore.

Sharp Aquos BDHP21U - bad decision

ak, Amazon
26 December 2010
  • Summary: This is a horrible Blu-Ray player. Did not play most of the formats it was suppoesed to play. Very slow! Problems with palying Blu-Rays (and yes I did install the latest firmware), normal DVD's, R+/R-.... Worked ok for music only CD's. The Blu-Ray player did break after 3 1/2 month! I would not recommend buying this product.

Even as a gift... Unacceptable!

16 November 2010
  • Summary: Last Christmas I received this unit as a gift. The two blu-ray movies inluded as part of my gift were not playable. About half of the Netflix blu-ray disks take about 5 to 10 minutes to load and most are not playable. I have upgraded the firmware so many times and now it is no longer supported by Sharp The unit is now 10 months old! About 10% of the netflix DVD non blu ray movies are unplayable.

Not happy

Gary, Amazon
12 October 2010
  • Summary: I am very unhappy with Bluray. I got the Sharp Aquos TV and matching player and they won't play about 20 percent of the movies I want to watch including Avatar. Apparently I am supposed to "update the firmware"! Well I don't have the internet at home. Very disappointed with Bluray and Sharp for selling me a system which is already obselete.

You do not want this DVD player

Mark Ramsey, Amazon
30 September 2010
  • Summary: First of all, this device is no longer supported by Sharp. Meaning their firmware updates (which seem to be required constantly) are spotty. The last one was months ago, and I just dropped in a new BluRay disc, got all the way through the trailers, and watched a black screen for minutes on end as the disc refused to load. No firmware update. No sense of what the problem is. That's not to say it's usually anything but slow. This is a PAINFULLY slow BluRay player.

"can not play burned disks. period."

mika1994, CNET
30 December 2009
  • Pros: so far all commercial dvds that I have purchased were played fine; only those that were rented sometimes had problems and stopped at certain point.
  • Cons: Can not play burned dvds at all! this is my biggest disappointment. spec is saying dvd+ and - r; not at all! What do I do? I have converted the video to MPEG2 - what else is needed :) ?

"Fails blu-ray play about 50% of the time..."

Fusion_master, CNET
30 December 2009
  • Pros: Very nice picture, when it works.
  • Cons: Sometimes, when it can't play a disc, it chokes on it so badly you have to reset the player (and by that I mean disconnecting the plug, waiting and reconnecting). Also EXTREMELY slow in loading and responding to the RC.

sharp bd player

Benjamin B. Wells, Amazon
28 December 2009
  • Summary: At first I was a little concerned because it didn't play Fargo (the first movie I tried). I read up on it and downloaded the software update, after that everything has played smoothly. The player took a long time to read the discs at first but after the update it reads twice as fast. Great picture and sound although a little quiet. Big player but doesn't bother me. Overall a great product for me.

Average at best

Amazonian, Amazon
5 December 2009
  • Summary: It took one month to deliver this dvd player. I dunno if it was a screw up in the shipping database or what but I will not count this towards my opinion on this item. This player is really slow, and one in every five discs that I put in, it makes this constant repetitively loud clicking sound that does not stop unless you plug it off and on again. Picture quality is great and so far it has played all of my normal dvd's and 2-3 blue rays. Average at best.
