Excerpt: When I bought my HDTV, of course, I needed a Blu-Ray player to go with it. :) I have to admit, I didn't put a lot of research into a Blu-Ray since I was so focused on getting the right HDTV, so, I really just ended up getting this Blu-Ray player because it was one of the ones in stock where I got my HDTV and I got a great deal on it since I also got my HDTV at the same time.
Excerpt: Bought this for Christmas from Amazon, my first BD player. Could not get it to play a BD, nothing but 'Reading Disk'. Tried to work with Sharp, was that ever a bad experience. After three weeks of trying to figure out the problem and concluding that the player was defective, they wanted to replace it with a refurbished unit. Huh? Paid for a new unit, and they wanted to replace it with another broken/fixed one? No way.
Excerpt: We purchased the Sharp- BDHP20U Blu-Ray player about 10 months ago. We use on average of 3 hours a day. It is our second Blu-Ray player and is used mostly by our children. We have had some problems with it. we have noticed that it can have a hard time reading disc., it is very slow and even reading DVD's. It take a a good two minutes to warm up and then tow more minute to load the movie. We have had it the door not want to open or jam on several occasion's.
Summary: I've owned this unit for about 1.5 years. It's been swapped out twice, and continues to have problems (now, playback pauses and restarts). It is no longer listed on their web site, there are no firmware upgrades, and you can no longer reach tech support for it by phone. This is a failed product and Sharp has abandoned it and their customers.
Summary: received the dvd player really quick in the mail, was very happy with the savings and quality of this product. The only negative thing I have to say is that it takes almost 2 minutes for this BlueRay player to read BlueRay discs and almost 5 minutes to read regular DVD's before actually seeing anything. Doesn't play a lot of different formats especially burned CD's from your computer so dont throw away your old DVD player if you purchase this product.
Summary: We purchased the BDHP20U as part of a package deal with the HDTV. Our first player would lock up within the first minute of loading any movie. I returned the unit to Best Buy thinking I was unlucky with the first unit. The problems started when we attempted to play a newer HD movie (Horton hears a who). The movie required a firware upgrade. The process is pretty simple. I downloaded the files, extracted them to a good USB stick and started the process.
Summary: I've had this player for almost a year, and I must say its the worst performing electronics item I've ever purchased. Not only are the updates confusing, the instructions compound the problem even more. I wouldnt take another one of these if they were free. Sorry I'm unable to give ZERO stars.
Summary: I've had my BDHP20u for nearly one year. Rent Netflix videos, watch 5-10 monthly and have only had 1 video not play in the last 11 months. The Blu-Ray is not a recorder in the sense of a VCR, instead it is actually a computer that has a large hard-drive in it that you store your movies on. All computers take time 'booting' up, and Blu-rays are no different.
