Sharp BD-HP20

  • Conclusion: While the BD-HP20 shows you don’t have to spend big to get Blu-ray into your life, it’s not one of the best examples of a player we’ve ever seen. Okay, so it’s a little unfair to pitch it against the other products here, as they’re all home cinema systems with audio included, but even on its own merits Sharp’s player is something of a disappointment.
  • Pros: A standalone player, the BD-HP20 is temptingly cheap compared to say the Pioneer LX01BD . It succeeds in delivering excellent Blu-ray pictures, thankfully, along with a quick power-on mode that shaves seconds off the sluggish start-up time that afflicts most Blu-ray players. Because in gadgetworld, there’s little much more annoying than prolonged start-up times…
  • Cons: …Irritatingly, though, this quick start function actually uses more power by keeping the player in a sort of semi-standby mode, so green-minded users will switch the thing off anyway. And with BD Profile 1.0 support only, both BonusView and BD-Live content are off the menu. Shame.
