Samsung BD-UP5000 1080p HD-DVD Blu-Ray Disc Combo Player

A.Pauley, Rate it all!
12 November 2008
  • Summary: I bought this product a couple weeks ago. This player is nearly a year old now, but the HD-DVD playback was an important feature to me. When HD-DVD officially called it quits, I picked up an Xbox 360 HD-DVD add on for $40 and lots of HD-DVDs on clearance. I decided it was time to jump over to Blu-Ray, and for simplicity I wanted one player. I compared this against the LG BD200, and this one turned out to be an excellent choice.

Samsung BD-UP5000 1080p HD-DVD Blu-Ray Disc Combo Player

  • Summary: Okay, more a Blu-ray player (pre. 2.0 profile) than HD-DVD, but supports full HD-DVD. I have to say the HD-DVD was ready at release, BD, not so much. So, this machine will support full HD-DVD, but not as well as the xbox-360-HD-DVD player. Got this machine to back-up my 360 just in-case is fails, but since BD (total crap if you ask me) won the HD-DVD war, I will settle for less.

FIRMWARE REVISION ENABLES ADVANCED AUDIO

Anthony Pizzi, Amazon
22 June 2008
  • Summary: Samsung BD-UP5000 1080p HD-DVD Blu-Ray Disc Combo Player This is the Samsung combo HD DVD/Blu-ray Disc player released earlier (and since discontinued, as I understand it). When it was introduced, it bowed to glowing reviews about its video performance, but general dismay about its limited advanced audio codec performance. I have owned this player since February, 2008. The first week of June I became aware of a firmware update (dated May 29, 2008).

What's with the price?

  • Summary: I use this player and so far it works very well. I do have to "reboot" it from time to time for some reason but that's no different than the Sony BDP-S300 and the Toshiba HD-A35 players I have in the other room. This must be something Samsungs are prone to because the HT-AS720S AV Reciever system I have the BD-UP5000 hooked up to must be shut off and back on once in a while for no apparent reason on start-up.

Almost Perfect

  • Summary: I've own this product for almost 3 weeks now and I've been happy with it. You hear all this stuff about audio limitation and it's true. It's quite annoying only hearing 2 channel on a "TrueHD" disc. But if you have a capable AVR, you can basically matrix the 2 channel into 5 channels and have a temporary audio solution until a firmware is out to fix it.

Very good, but could be improved

  • Summary: Is not Dolby TrueHD multi-channel capable. The samsung bd-up5000 only plays 2 channels in Dolby TrueHD, but soon I hope will be. Very good image, sound, stylist... It should be multiregion, at least 1 and 4 (almost same for Region A on blu-ray), Hope that soon it would.

  • Summary: ** This updated review is intended to be a 5 star rating; however, I can't seem to edit that part of my old review! ** I was one of those who eagerly awaited this player after its announcement, and quickly bought one as soon as it was available. In most respects, it was an excellent player, with quick load times, excellent video quality, and few compatibility issues (none that I experienced).

Awesome!!!

  • Summary: I have had this for a few weeks, and I am loving it. The deal with the audio problems should be sorted out with future firmware upgrades according to Samsung. I haven't had a single problem with this unit. The interface is outstanding. The 1080 24P capability is a huge plus and it is pretty much a final spec unit for both formats. The only thing it is missing is the 1GB ram that the final 2.0 Blu-ray spec requires.

BD-UP5000 good and bad

Kevin Windrem, Amazon
26 January 2008
  • Summary: I picked up a BD-UP5000 when limited quantities appeared in mid December 2007 and have been quite happy with the unit. It's my first venture into HD disc playback and having a single box to play all DVD formats was essential. This player delivers excellent picture and sound quality (including exceptional SD DVD upscaling). Less than 10% of HD DVD and Blu-Ray titles have only a TrueHD track which will output as 2-channel stereo.
