Christopher Dahlberg "Spinneroonie", Amazon
12 July 2011
  • Summary: Well this sucks. I ordered this dual format Blu-ray/Hd-dvd player only to find out it does not play Blu-ray. It will not recognize those discs. Of course that company I bought this from never said that.

I'll never buy another Samsung product after this experience

R. Peterson "Board game geek", Amazon
25 February 2010
  • Summary: I purchased this combo player in April 2008 when Toshiba announced that HD-DVD would no longer be supported so that I would have a player for both Bluray and my existing HD-DVD collection. I moved my existing Toshiba HD-DVD player to my bedroom and set up this player in the living room.

  • Summary: I bought this product a couple weeks ago. This player is nearly a year old now, but the HD-DVD playback was an important feature to me. When HD-DVD officially called it quits, I picked up an Xbox 360 HD-DVD add on for $40 and lots of HD-DVDs on clearance.

  • Summary: I would like to add this most recent review to let everyone know that since the most recent firmware update and many long days trying to figure out how this component works, I actually got the player to play the full HD audio resolution on my VSX-94TXH Pioneer receiver I purchased recently.

  • Summary: Okay, more a Blu-ray player (pre. 2.0 profile) than HD-DVD, but supports full HD-DVD. I have to say the HD-DVD was ready at release, BD, not so much. So, this machine will support full HD-DVD, but not as well as the xbox-360-HD-DVD player.

The perfect do-it-all player! (with the latest firmare)

Blair S., Newegg
28 August 2008
  • Summary: There were some audio problems prior to the latest firmware. Make sure you have version 1.3. Some people have had problems reading certain discs (especially Fox Blu-rays). I've never had any such problem, but if you do, you can send the player in for service to get the problem corrected.
  • Pros: The Samsung BD-UP5000 is a wonderful player for HD-DVD, Blu-ray, and DVD! I've had zero problems with any discs. The video quality is excellent, supporting 1080p at 24Hz from HD-DVD and Blu-ray. SD sources can be upscaled to 1080p with the awesome HQV Reon chip, the best consumer-grade upscaler a...
  • Cons: Other users have reported that this player can't read BD-R/BD-RE burned discs. I haven't tried, but I still consider it a con. It does read burned DVDs with no problems though. Can't output SD-DVD movies at 24Hz.
