Summary: Great picture! After upgrading the firmware, the Philips BDP9000 had no problems playing Blu-ray discs including Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Philips hasn't appeared to keep up with their firmware updates, however, and the recent film SUNSHINE would not play at all. All was not lost, however, since the Philips machine is identical to the Samsung BD-P1000 (except for cosmetics) and Samsung appears to still be releasing regular firmware updates.
Summary: I bought this player in June, I did not get a 1080p tv until Dec. The player plays my regular dvd's fine but when I tried a couple of blue ray discs I discovered. 1.The third Pirates Of The Carribien movie would only play the previews and the bonus disc, and 2.The third Resident Evil movie will not play at all. I called Phillips customer care and they sent me another player ( this took 10 days ). The replacement acted exactly the same as the first.
Summary: For the money, I am pretty disappointed that this player will not play some discs. The discs are brand new, but shows like Weeds simply will not play. I signed up for Blockbuster to get blue-ray discs in the mail, but canceled the membership when the admittedly roughly handled discs would skip or lock up. Very unsatisfied.
Summary: I just picked up this model a few weeks ago, and so far I'm very impressed. Standard dvds look amazing and Blu-rays look absolutely stunning. I've read some complaints about the audio options, but I don't know what that's about. I have it hooked up through digital optical and multi-channel, and the sound is phenominal. Also, the setup menu options are very user friendly. I don't know why more people aren't buying this model. There's my 2 cents.
Summary: All current Blu-ray players are not capable of firmware upgrades, BR players are not capable of of a lot of special features that HD-DVD is capable of, look at the announcement of the HD-DVD for Blood Diamond and compare it to the BR version. BR players are not worth it right now, starting in Nov BR players will have online and will be able to compete better with HD-DVD.
Summary: I purchased the Philips Blu-ray player. Obviously, when you pay this much, you'de better be impressed. Unfortunately, I was not very impressed. While this player does play Blu-ray disks, it operates like a $150 player. We also notices that transitions between scenes in movies were choppy and jumpy. We sent it back to Amazon and traded it in on a Sony Blu-ray player. The difference is like night and day.
Summary: URGENT UPDATE: INSTALL SAMSUNG 1.9 Driver to the Philips Player To Fix Problems!!! It's Feb 2009 and this Blu Ray player was having trouble with certain new Blu Ray releases . . . they wouldn't play, etc. I was told this unit would be useless soon and Philips was not updating firmware. I searched and found this thread [...] and it suggested installing the Samsung Driver . . . I was skeptical at first, but was about to scrap this thing . . .
