Excerpt: Replacing my faulty video player seemed a bad reasoning to upgrade to blu-ray playback now that I’m an adult. If the cost of such expense would be waived off courtesy of my parents as a Christmas gift, I would be a hypocrite to turn it down.
Summary: I could not find both optical audio output and subwoofer output in the newer players but this one has both. It is very-well built and almost too big and heavy for my taste. The disc tray looks heavy-duty and opens/closes very smoothly like the pricey high-end Denon. Audio / video performance is very good thru HDMI, optical or analog outputs. The remote has a nice layout and is big enough for people with big hands.
Summary: I would have rated 0 stars if it would let me. We have had problesms with this player since the day we opened it. We purchased it at a Black Friday Sale at Best Buy and we had problems that are definitely manufacturer issues. Each time the disc tray tries to open it can never open all the way and the display reads "blocked." The same thing occurs when it tries to close. You manually have to push it to close it and vice versa to open it.
Summary: This blu-ray player came very well packaged. It took a little longer then I would have expected for it to start working, but once it did it produced a great quality picture. The fan seems to run a bit loud when its left on.
Summary: This is my first blu ray player and I'm not too impressed. It plays all discs fine, but it doesnt respond to commands in a decent time at all. The remotes' buttons are annoying to push, and will not work unless you are pointing it spot on at the player. When you turn on your tv the player automatically turns on. Cool, you would think. Except for when you are using a different console for entertainment and you turn off your player and your tv shuts off.
Decent but I found at least one movie it won't play until a firmware update

Summary: Bedtime Stories (Plus Standard DVD + Digital Copy + BD Live) [Blu-ray ]I've owned this unit for a few months now and it works like it should however I contacted Philips to make aware that the newer release from Disney "Bedtime Stories" will not play the main feature. It gets though the previews but when it starts to load the main feature it sets back to the white screen with PHILIPS in blue screen and repeats the previews.
Summary: This has been a great machine after 11 months of use. It has been reliable and has played all of my titles without glitches. It bitstreams Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HDMA to my Onkyo audio reciever. I was and am still very pleasantly surprised by this machine. Kudos to Philips.
I would recommend the 5992 instead for most folks at this time

Summary: Have owned/installed dozens of DVD players. Comparing this one with Sony 301, BX1, Toshiba A2, E500, Philips 5992 and Oppo 970HD. Blu-Ray - ok. If you must have a BD player, this may be a nice choice. Especially if you need Divx compatiblity. No Ethernet tho. SD DVD - Upconversion is typically poor, as is most BD players. Not as good as HD DVD, E500, or Oppo. Even $39 5992 is superior. Divx - poor resolution, compared to 5992.
