Summary: Bought this for my boyfriend's Christmas in 2011. Hasn't been used much since then, probably no more than twenty times and now it won't power up from standby. Now out of warranty but we were prepared to pay to have it fixed but Phillips aren't interested. So it's for the bin and I won't be buying from Phillips again.
Summary: When it works, the experience watching DVDs and viewing BBC iPlayer is great. But that's not very often. The player frequently crashes when accessing menu options; usually holding down the power button for several seconds forces a re-boot, but sometimes even this doesn't work and it needs to be unplugged from the mains. The Philips NetTV server is often unreachable, despite there being no problem with Internet access through the same router from other devices.
Summary: Slow to load, the menu has gremlins (hangs and then half loads pages), doesn't recognize USB until device is pulled out and put back in again (every time), won't play certain formats now and doesn't recognise the official firmware to update it (you have to download to USB as it won't do it from Wi-Fi for some reason). I have probably been unlucky and had a duff one as I can't see that they would've released such a buggy unit. Returned and I shall be getting the Which?
Summary: On setting this system up it worked fine. BUT, a software update was prompted and carried out. This resulted in the Wi-Fi in-build dongle not working. Went to the Philips site and downloaded the software to manually try to resolve. The technical advisor said that you should only update the software if you have a issue, but the web site encourages the updates to get new features and improvements.
Philips BDP5200/05 3D Blu-ray disc and DVD player with USB and WiFi
C. Taggart, Amazon
22 February 2012
Summary: Like others I was swayed by the reviews (Which etc.) as I wouldn't have considered buying a Phililps product. I also really wanted the built-in wifi facility to watch YouTube/internet. While it plays discs well and the wifi sometimes works well, I have come to hate this product with a passion. Sometimes the remote seems to work, sometimes not. Sometimes discs play and rewind and eject with the remote but usually not.
Summary: Bought this following a Which? recommendation as a best buy. Looks good, but . . . . there is a discernible whine while playing 2D discs. I tried two different discs and the same thing. It is generally a bit noisy when loading discs, but that doesn't really spoil the drama. However, the noise on regular playback is a pain.
Summary: I was looking forward to this Blue Ray player with built in Wifi and access to Internet Gateway services. I was very disappointed. The quality of the build was poor with a very plasticy appearance. Although it played Blue Ray disks and DVDs very well, as soon as I tried any Internet Gateway services the player locked up and would not respond to any remote control commands. The only way to get the player back was to disconnect it from the mains and plug it back in.
Summary: arrived faulty,it is slow and noisey, handset is cheap, played the usb stick and dvds, but would not play any of my 4 blurays, which played ok on the phillips cheaper version,i have now given up on the brand.as it was a replacement for a cheaper phillips model that went wrong in just three months, sent back will now try panasonic
