This Panasonic Blu-ray recorder adds features that the older DMR-BW850 didn't offer -- and it's cheaper

Good Gear Guide.au
29 January 2011
  • Summary: The Panasonic DMR-BW880 has almost every feature you could hope for in a media player. The 500GB hard drive can store plenty of compressed video recordings (which can also be copied to Blu-ray), its network support allows Internet features and media sharing, and, best of all, it's cheaper than the model it replaces.
  • Pros: DLNA server capability, cheaper than DMR-BW850
  • Cons: Still expensive, could use more Internet features

Panasonic DMR-BW880 review

  • Summary: A quick straw poll – hands up if you read the manual. Anyone? Bueller…? But with Panasonic’s DMR-BW880, it isn’t so much desirable as essential that you take the time to digest the instructional blurb – all 124 pages of it. That’s because, as hugely impressive as it is, we’ve seldom encountered a product as complex as this. Even precisely defining it takes some thought.

What Hi-Fi?

  • Excerpt: Let's face it, no-one bothers to read the manual any more. But with Panasonic 's DMR-BW880, it isn't so much desirable as essential that you take the time to digest the instructional blurb – all 124 pages of it. That's because, as hugely impressive as it is, we've seldom encountered a product as complex as this. Even precisely defining it takes some thought.
  • Pros: Great recording and playback quality, huge flexibility caters for every need
  • Cons: Complex – so much so that it can be awkward to live with, not cheap, either

  • Summary: A glimpse at the future of set top boxes, but wait until price comes down
  • Pros: It’s a Freeview HD PVR and a Blu-ray recorder in one
  • Cons: No Wi-Fi, costs as much as a new HDTV
