Worked well for a year; now it skips all the time

ghtx, CNET
10 July 2013
  • Summary: I bought this 13 months ago since it was editor's pick. It worked pretty good, but some snafus with streaming speed (I know it wasn't the connection speed from my home wifi, which is plenty fast. For some reason the player often had trouble getting fast wifi.) For the last few months, its ability to read blu ray discs has been terrible. Now nearly every disc I get from Netflix (which are usually a little bit scratched) skips at one point during the film.
  • Pros: easy to use, streaming, Netflix
  • Cons: Skips on Blu rays

CNET didn't test long enough

gilliganjr, CNET
18 July 2012
  • Summary: We bought this player in early May after CNET gave it their Editor's Choice (2012) award. In July, it was struggling to maintain wi-fi network connectivity. After working to get that restored, then Netflix still wouldn't stream. Ultimately, it took resetting the device to factory/memory defaults (using steps provided on the Panasonic support site for this player). Netflix works again (for now), but it was a hassle that I hope doesn't recur every 2.5 months.
  • Pros: It is a fine blu-ray player, and streams all of the services I like (Amazon, Vudu, Hulu+ and Netflix*)
  • Cons: Netflix - do a search for "Panasonic and Netflix" and you will discover that Viera Connect (on TVs and Blu-Ray players) has had on-going problems with streaming Netflix.

Buyer Beware! The Amazon Instant Video app may be missing from this player!

jwcosta, Amazon
14 July 2012
  • Summary: Buyer beware! We purchased the DMP-BDT220 player from Costco. The model number was designated as DMP-BDT220CP. On certain blu-ray players with this model number, the Amazon Instant Video app is missing and there is no way to download it! After spending about an hour trying to figure it out on my own, I called Panasonic technical support and was told that this bug affects approximately 1 in every 10 of these players.

Noisy as...Heck!

D-Hicks, CNET
3 May 2012
  • Summary: I only had this player for 30 minutes hoping that the noisy disc drive would go away, but it didn't, no matter what I played, Blu Ray, DVD, CD, whatever! It was very annoying. It might have been just THAT player, but I tried a disc on the floor model...same thing. But hey, you can always take it back.
  • Pros: Good Picture & Audio, nice navigation
  • Cons: Did I mention it was Loud?

Beware of Panasonic pricing & 'special' offers!

Jefftech, CNET
18 April 2012
  • Summary: I bought this unit in Canada. Canada & U.S. money are at par or the Canadian dollars is worth more. WHY are we paying more for this unit?
  • Pros: Great picture, easy set-up & 2D to 3D conversion
  • Cons: No 2nd HDMI connection, older player had better esthetics., Player is obsolete within months.

Mixed bag with some big flaws

Amazon Customer, Amazon
24 October 2012
  • Summary: This Blu-Ray player plays DVDs and Blu-ray discs really well - a really quick start-up for instance, far quicker in fact than other Panasonic DVD products (eg Panasonic DMR-EZ49vEBK Super Multi Format Combi Recorder with Freeview which takes an age to fire up). I just wanted to warn potential buyers of a few big flaws in this unit. Firstly, it doesn't remember where you got to when watching a disc.

BBC iPlayer problems

mjcmoppel, Amazon
13 October 2012
  • Summary: Bought this unit from Amazon in May and up to the beginning of October I was very pleased. All of a sudden the BBC iPlayer app dispays a security issue dialogue box when you play a programme, that you cannot get rid of! Having contacted the BBC they have told me that this player has not yet been certified to play content from BBC iPlayer. Here is a link below to their current list of certified devices.
