With the end of the format war fading in the rear-view mirror, manufacturers of Blu-ray players have one last obstacle to overcome to help bring Blu-ray into the mainstream—make a dedicated player that provides the user experience of the Sony PlayStation 3. (Okay, they must also bring the price down to DVD levels in order to really reach the mainstream.) In addition to delivering a first-rate audio/video experience, players must also offer a user experience on par with... Read more

The Panasonic DMP-BD55 is without doubt the best Blu-ray player available right now. It boasts an unrivalled feature list, which includes full BD Live compatibility and wide ranging format support, plus it's slick, easy to use and delivers even better picture and sound performance than the BD35 - all of which makes its price tag look pretty reasonable, especially when you consider there are Profile 1.1 players that cost almost twice as much. I got this right after Christmas 2009 from Warehouse Deals, Inc. Very fast shipping. Player is super. I got it because it has the analog speaker outputs I needed for my older stereo receiver. It also has a really good picture. Read more
I choose this product b/c of all the great reviews I got off cnet. They weren't lying. It's great. It's better than using a PS3 b/c it has some audio options that the PS3 doesn't and it's truely lossless. The PS3 uses PCM to bit stream conversion... not good. That won't matter unless you have a high quality surround sound system. Also, you can get the bd35 and it does nearly everything the 55 does and it's $100 cheaper. Read more
Comments about Panasonic DMP-BD55: Showing movies outdoors is important for my work. The question is why have a Blue Ray player alone, when something like a PS3 for around the same price also plays games? Less resale value, less versatility, I just don't see it. Read more
Pros: The best Picture and Sound I've seen on a Blu-ray player yet. Very fast and quiet. BD-Live and Firmware update(s). Upconversion is one of the best I've seen. Design and build quality is good and slim. Blue LED in front looks nice when room is dark. Neatly hidden playback controls. SD-card slot. Cons: Price is a bit expensive. Slow load times as with any blu-ray player, still the fastest I've seen though. No wireless or USB. Can't play certain region DVD's. Read more
