Conclusion: Through our review of the Oppo BDP-95 we came to learn that the company’s less expensive BDP-93 is an absolutely outstanding universal disc player in its own right. Taking that into consideration, as we progressed through our evaluations, we realized that the real question at hand was “are the BDP-95’s audiophile features worth the added cost?
Summary: More good coverage can be found at The Perfect Vision, Audioholics.com and CNET. British sites such as AVForums.com and What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision magazine look at the nearly identical European version of the BDP-95. Lots of user comments, questions and analysis can be found on forums such as AVSForum.com.
Pros: Audiophile-grade sound quality, Excellent 3D Blu-ray video quality, Comprehensive disc and file support
Cons: Expensive, Fan noise, Limited networking capability
Excerpt: Over the past several years, Oppo has steadily been carving out a healthy chunk of the disk player market and for all the right reasons. From day one, the firm has followed a singular vision that involves building versatile players that combine often shockingly high levels of performance and value in equal measure.
Excerpt: OPPO Digital first entered the market selling a $199 upscaling DVD player around the end of 2004 or the beginning of 2005. At the time, that put them pretty firmly in the entry-level sector of the market. As the years have gone by and the market has changed, OPPO Digital has evolved as well. Their new offering, the BDP-95, represents the latest step in that evolution.
Excerpt: Audiophiles have been waiting a long time for the Oppo BDP-95: it’s one of those players that’s been a ‘promise’ for such a long time. Some, indeed, have cynically wondered whether its release was deliberately delayed because Oppo knew that the release of the BDP-95 would dramatically curtail sales of its own BDP-93, despite the BDP-93’s lower price.
Excerpt: OPPO is not a brand that immediately springs to mind when you think high-end AV. But over the years, this largely anonymous outfit has consistently produced disc players that quietly over-deliver. The BDP-95EU is its latest and most ambitious model. Priced at £900 it may seem a tad expensive, but in reality this audiophile grade Blu-ray deck is actually a bit of a bargain.
Excerpt: If our tests were won purely on packaging, then you’d be staring at the winner. The Oppo BDP-95EU comes snugly secured in its very own ‘bag for life’, for heaven’s sake, while accessories such as the power cable, wi-fi dongle and chunky remote control come in stylish black box baring the Oppo logo.
