Summary: This is the second Oppo product that I have purchased; the first being the DV981 DVD player. As others have already mentioned, the BDP 83 is a very classy unit - from the packaging to the weightiness, appearance and operation of the unit, it exudes a level of quality that very few, if any, mass market consumer electronics possess.
Summary: First off, this oppo 83SE arrived very well packaged. I mean very well.. Beyond the call of duty. Everything is neat & tightly, & comes with a carrying bag & two calibration disc, one for audio, one for video. They also include a 6FT HDMI cable which is un heard of.
The special in the special edition is the SABRE32 DAC along with a better Power supply. To fully benefit from the SABRE DACS you need to use a 2 channel system.
Pros: Price to performance. Plays every format. Excellent CS. SABRE32 DAC chip. Great HD picture quality.
Cons: Chassis is the same as the 83 model. Drawer could be more sturdy. Runs a bit hot.
Summary: Heard all the hype and finally broke down and purchased this machine. Really a outstanding blu ray player from a video perspective. Up conversion very good. My only issue was the lack of quality audio using the 7.1 analog connections. I have a Rotel 1067 receiver that lacks hdmi connections, but would not even think about replacing it. The Rotel delivers all the time. The audio dacs in the Oppo could of been better.
Summary: It will handle DVDs, SACD and Bluray. If you need to have 1 transport, this is not a bad choice. I can't say that it has knocked by socks off, but it has been reliable, with excellent picture and sound. Loads faster than many Bluray players.
Summary: I bought this player for its audio quality (rated A+ via HDMI by Stereophile-October issue). However, I found its video quality is also excellent when playing DVD (no Blu-ray yet). It is much better than the Oppo DV981HD and the Philips DVP-9000S (a DVD player costing more than the Oppo BDP83) which was mainly sold in Europe and Asia from 2005. Except for its fast forward and fast reverse issues mentioned in review by others, I have no problem with the player so far.
Summary: Before I purchased this Blu-ray Player (the Oppo BDP-83) I owned a PS3. I also have several friends who own various Blu-ray Players including Samsung and Panasonic. Before I start the review let me say that all of these were connected to the TV with Monster HDMI 1000 cables into Sony XBR series televisions. I am writing this review mainly to assist those comparing current models - primarily those who own or are thinking of buying a PS3.
