Good Blu-Ray Player

  • Excerpt: We decided to finally join the world of blu-ray players and ordered this LG-BD550 Blu-Ray player to go with our new flat screen tv.   We don't have a lot of blu-ray movies yet, but have watched a few and I haven't seen a huge difference between blu-ray movies and just regular dvd's.  I have felt like the upconverting feature has helped our regular dvd's look better on our high definition Television.

Hooray for some features - BOO for others

Hillbilly Homeboy, Amazon

  • Summary: First, the good - unit works great. Can watch Netflix and other on-demand movies. Makes my DVDs look good even on an older JVC TV. I have no complaints there. However, some things you should know: 1) Remote can only be programmed to work with a limited (to me) number of TVs - mine is not one of them. SO, you have to keep a couple of remotes handy to run the TV and run the unit.

Good overall but one big flaw

Jeremy Livingston, Amazon

  • Summary: Everyone else has done a good job of explaining how nice this blue ray player is. The menus are easy and setup was quick... Just one complaint from me: The wireless USB dongle they included with is has to be plugged into the FRONT of the player. So sitting there under my TV this has a USB stick just stuck into the front of it. It's about 3.5 inches long and looks very unsightly.

Wireless network connection

  • Summary: The unit works as I expected with one little surprise. The description says the wireless dongle is included, which it is, however it's about 3 inches long and the only USB port on the machine is in the front. I'm sure that sooner or later this thing is going to get broken or misplaced. I should have looked a little closer at the picture I guess.

OK player, but just barely

  • Summary: My observations, opinions, and preferences make this a mediocre product at best. Others' observations, opinions, and preferences may make this perfectly suitable for them. That said... This is my second BD-640. The first one arrived defective. The tray wouldn't open. A phone call to LG Customer Service at 2:00am Pacific got very quick, courteous support, but it was still dead, Jim. So back it went. Amazon cross shipped a new player, next day, no charge. Yippee!

Horrible Customer Service

steadyeddy, Amazon
4 January 2011
  • Summary: Two months ago by BD550 notified me that I should download a firmware update. Fair enough. I have now tried to download it a dozen times over the last two months, and it will not work. Customer service says, "The servers have been overloaded with downloads, try later." "What, you mean they've been overloaded for two months straight?" "If you are not having any troubles playing movies, why do you want the firmware update?

Hope you have 20/20 vision

JIMMY CAMURATI, Amazon

  • Summary: I have an LG BD370 DVD player and I thought I would upgrade to the latest greatest model. Well after hooking it up and watching a movie, I don't see much difference. In fact, I like the older model much better. The BD550 display window is about half the size of the BD350, which makes it next to impossible to read from any distance. The BD370 has large circular control in the middle which glows red for regular DVD's and Blue for Blue Ray DVD's.

  • Summary: great blue ray player. I should have gotten the 570 with wi-fi. That would allow me to take advantage of all the devices features. Currently my router is too far away to be wired to my blue ray player.

great picture, not for netflix

Walmart
20 June 2010
  • Summary: I bought the LG BD550 for its Netflix feature. Due to a 'known problem' between LG and Netflix, I wasn't able to use that feature. Other than that, it had a very good picture quality. I waited a week after contacting LG and Netflix and decided to return the blu-ray player and get a different one. I would recommend it if all you need is the player. I would not recommend it for its Netflix feature.
