It’s Friday, a good day for cell phone reviews eh?

You can also check out our review for the Pantech Matrix Pro

I’ve got the Pantech Matrix dual slider qwerty phone for AT&T for review today, I’ve used the phone for the last week every day  doing what you would normally do with a phone… in my time with the Matrix I’ve actually come to like it very much, it’s a nice little phone that is lightweight, well made, easy to use and it’s got decent battery life as well.

The Matrix features a dual slider with standard keypad and full qwerty keyboard that allows for quick and easy texting and emailing. It also features a video camera that you can zoom while recording, a 1.3MP still camera, Bluetooth, MP3 player and even XM radio.

For phone reviews I give them seven days of everyday use, the phone being reviewed replaces my regular phone and goes with me everywhere, if by seven days I’m not accustomed to the phone then it’s go some problems that need to be worked out. With the Matrix I had no real problems at all, after a couple days of using it I was very comfortable with it. The Pantech Matrix is really a great little phone…

First up of course we’ve got the video unboxing

Since I’m on AT&T already all I had to do was pop in my sim card and I was ready to go,  of course I threw in a microSD card as well for good measure to make sure everything worked alright.

So I charged the phone and I got a little over three hours talk time actually, and I was using my Jawbone2 BT headset with it so Bluetooth was running most of the time as well. Since I was actually using the phone for the last week I couldn’t leave it sit for ten days in stand by to check that , but if the talk time I got is any indication of the battery life then the Matrix should easily get the rated ten days.

The Matrix is  smaller than my AT&T Tilt, so it took a bit to get accustomed to it, the size and the interface that is. Since it is a dual slider I found it easier to talk on the phone if it was slid out vertically, it added more body to the phone to hold onto. The keyboard slides to the left which for me is very odd as my Tilt slides to the right, using it though was actually easy, the keys look small but I was typing on it very easily with no problems at all.

The interface is essentially the same as the Rugby that I reviewed a while back, it’s still full of AT&T Bloat and everywhere you turn they’re trying to get you to buy something, it gets annoying, really it does, why does it have to be on every single menu?  Besides that though the interface seems to work, for me it was a bit confusing coming from a Windows Mobiles Based Device, even after a week I still got lost in the navigation, but I was coming around.

Here’s a video of the interface in action, with comments along the way:

As for service I had no problems, I’m on AT&T because it works for me in my area perfectly, and I’ll be with them for some time to come I’m sure. I’ve tried two other companies and it was hard for me to even get a call in my house with them, but with AT&T I’ve got no problems with that. Call quality was very clear, everyone I spoke too said I sounded fine even through the Bluetooth connection.

The Matrix itself is a great little phone really, it feels very well made, it looks heavier than it actually is.

I had no problems pairing my Jawbone2 BT headset with it, it worked every time I turned it on.

The GPS is Assisted GPS using the AT&T’s own navigation system, so you’ll either have to subscribe to it or pay extra charges. It works fine in a pinch, but of course nothing beats a real GPS system.

The included camera is ok for stills as long as there’s enough light, and even indoors the pictures are generally decent as long as you hold the phone steady. The video recording is  a bit worse in low light or indoors though.

Here’s a sample movie taken with the Matrix:

You can see the video isn’t the greatest indoors, outdoors in brighter light is better, but not much really, and besides it’s only 15 second clips so you won’t be filming any movies with it.

and here are some sample pictures taken in both portrait and landscape modes:

Photo10181529_2 Photo10181532_2 Photo10231021 Photo10231022 Photo10231022_1 Photo10231022_2 Photo10231022_3 Photo10231022_4

The still pictures are actually not too bad, they’re a bit fuzzy, but surprisingly good  as long as you hold the phone very still and there’s enough light. It’s not too good with close ups and dark images as you can see with the NZXT Avatar mouse and the back of my AT&T Tilt phone. The brighter ones are a bit better, and even close up they’re not too bad.

One thing that irks me about the picture system in the phone is that you can’t take pictures quickly, and this was the same for the Samsung Rugby as well. What I mean is that when you take a picture it won’t automatically save it so you can just take another picture, you’ve got to save it manually before taking the next shot. That’s fine if you want to preview every picture you take and make sure it’s ok, but what if I don’t want to preview every picture? I couldn’t find anything in the settings to change this either, like to turn preview on or off… I guess it’s more of a personal preference from using a regular camera as much as I do.

Conclusion:
I might be a bit biased here, but I love phones with full keyboards on them, most all of my phones have had keyboards on them so I like the Matrix for including a keyboard.

The Pantech Matrix is a great little phone, call quality is excellent, as is battery life and overall usability. If you’re in the market for a new phone then I suggest you give the Matrix a try, it’s small, lightweight, and has got some great features that I’m sure anyone would appreciate.

The camera could be improved a bit, and of course getting rid of the AT&T bloat would make the phone even more enjoyable to own.

Pros:
Easy to use
QWERTY Keyboard
Well made
Quick and easy to slide either way
Excellent sound clarity
Good battery life

Cons:
Pictures and video not good indoors/low lighting
ATT Bloat included

I reallllyyy want this phone. I’ll probably be getting it soon, maybe within a week or so. I’ve looked up so much stuff on it, looked at all the reviews, and it seems like a pretty good built phone. I think the dual slider is perfect for me, since I like phones like that & I’m beginning to text more.
I really don’t like reading the bad comments but there are some people that have it & have had no trouble with it? SO I hope that when I get the phone it just doesn’t break on me right away….Of course, I will be extra careful with it.
Right now I have the Razr V3xx (pink) , and going from a 1 year old flip phone to a brand new dual slider is big to me. The phone just seems so cool, and I hope I don’t have to many big problems with it. It seems so great, I’m really excited!
BUT can you answer some questions for me? Where did you buy yours at, Store, or Att.com? (whats cheaper??) Does the battery hold last good? Is the keyboard durable, and is it really always falling off?? (idt soo..but idk)
THANKS!!! LOVING & WANTING THIS PHONEEE! <3

I have had this phone since September 2008. I love it! I text my kids all the time and the range is perfect. I do have 2 text messages that have been stuck in my outbox for almost 2 months now that I cannot delete. Has anyone else had this problem? It does not affect any current received or sent text messages but these 2 just won’t go away. If anyone has had anything like this with their Pantech Matrix and could fix it, please email me at cindy_leimkuehler@hotmail.com. I took it to the AT&T store at a local level but they couldn’t figure it out either.
    Thanks!

    BAD MICROPHONES

I bought 2 of these phones last fall when they were first released, one for each of my kids. We had been waiting for an AT&T phone with a qwerty keyboard that wasn’t a smartphone so were thrilled to see the Matrix.

The kids both love their phones. My son has had a couple minor technical issues (mini SD card had to be reformatted is one), but no deal breakers. My daughter has not had any troubles at all.

I am happy that they have phones they like, but I am very unhappy about the POOR QUALITY OF MICROPHONES in these phones. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND what they are saying … sounds like the sound is coming from a broken or poor quality speaker, really tinny-sounding. However, it’s not the phones on the receiving end. The problem started when they started using their phones and it occurs regardless of which phone/handset I am listening on and only when they are on their cell phones. My daughter swears it’s just me who can’t understand what she is saying, but then she also says that her friend’s mom complains that she can’t understand her daughter, either, who also happens to have a Matrix.

I’m getting this phone on April 15th!! :]

I’m super excited! I’ve wanted it for like a month, & I’m going to the AT&T store and trading in my old phone for this one!!!! (although they said I could keep my old phone :] ) I’m happy my contract is running out so I can get this :]
It seems like an awesome phone. & not alot of people seem to have trouble with it……
If you’ve had any specific trouble let me know. ;]

    Thanks :)

Hey omigawsh i am getting this phone on Sunday. I am 12 years old and it is my first phone!!! (My parents just didnt think it was “necessary”.) It looks amazing and it will be awesome to hav a QWERTY keyboard! I am also excited about all the picture options. I am aware that some of the phones’ sliding mechanisms break really easily, and I will try to be as careful as possible. I am also reeeaaalllyyy excited about stupid simple stuff that every phone has, like ringtones and picture backgrounds and all of that lame simple personalization stuf!!!!!
    :)

  8. cristy says:

omg i hav dis phone but my mom wont give it to me yet im excited though i got blue is tht a good color ???

  9. Megan says:

Hey guyz! i got the matrix and let me tell u it is ahhh-mayy-zinnggg!!! it is soooo easy to txt ur friends and all the pic options are so cool and theres a ton of stuff thats totally awesome!!! i got it in blue and i am planning to bedazzle it in silver rhinestones. im glad i can vote for American Idol now, but one pet peeve is that u hav to go and do four steps to send stuff to a contact that u havent memorized. BLEH! oh well it is the best fone ever i recommend it to anybody!!! all my friends are sooo jealous.

  10. peach says:

hey i got a pantech and i tryed to text and it keeps saying network out of order and it sucks

  11. Casey says:

I’m thinking about getting the Matrix. I would really like to get it. However my mom was looking at all the reviews and saw that when you put it in your pocket, the keyboard locks but it calles 911. has any one else had this problem?

  12. Aaron says:

I didn’t see XM Radio on my Pantech like the reviewer had. But to some people saying that you can’t customize a ringtone per person, you can. You just have to go to your contacts, go to edit then scroll down to where it has ringtone and you can set it there.

  13. Aaron says:

haavn’t had that problem casey. I’ve had my phone in my pocket and after the default settings it goes into lock mode meaning you have to press a series of two button to get it unlocked again.

  14. natalie says:

i just got this phone the other day.
so far no problems the phone is great.
i think the key board is just a little small
BUT i think the raised buttoms keep it from being tough to text
i actually text faster on this phone then anyother phone ive owned
& ive been through a hell of alot of phones.
i really like the weight and width of the phone.
and my sliders work just fine.

  15. taylorr says:

im looking into getting this phone. Im currently using the old 8GB iPhone and we’re having to ‘down size’ with phones due to the very pricey cost. Im very pleased with almost all the reviews ive read, however i do have one question:

As far as sending and recieving picture texts, is that problem? I read a comment earlier saying that they could send a picture, but not receive one.

With the iPhone I didnt set my email account mostly due to the fact I dont email a lot, which meant I couldnt send or receive pictures. With that saying, I would enjoy a phone where I could easily.

So ya, is sending and receiving pictures a problem?

  16. joe says:

hey i have the pantech matrix it is a nice phone but i have 1 problem with it =(

hi im autumn and i have the red pantech matrix but the only thing about it is that that wont let me transfer pictures on to my memory card but the rest of the phone is really cool i hope i keep for a long time or until there is another phone that comes out that i really want but i want the quickfire for christmas i heard thats a really good phone.

  20. autumn says:

i love the naked brothers band

  21. Alexandria[: says:

i have had this phone since christmas and i think it is great. i probably send about 200 hundred texts on a normal day (of course because im a 13 year old girl haha). i have dropped this phone a few times – once while i was running and it fell about 3feet onto concrete and it still has not broken. the only problem i have had is about once or twice a month as i am recieving a text the screen will go black but it is still on and all i have to do is remove then replace the battery. i also do not know how to get music onto it from Windows Media Player – i have bought the USB cable but when i plug it into computer and do what the little instruction book said nothing happens D: if anyone can help please email me at dairyqueen7887@yahoo.com and i also have the MicroSD card but nothing happens when i put that into computer either.
i hear about people having problems with things falling off but i have had mine for 4months and no problems, so i would recomend it but maybe before you buy it ask if you can hold it and see if hinges feel weak or something.
    -Enjoy

i have the black and green matrix and i love it! ive had it for a few months and have had no problem with it.

  26. Cristen says:

Yes, you CAN change the ringtones for diffrent people if you save their number to the Phone, not the SIM. You can also change the texting ringtone, but you can’t change it for diffrent people.

    GREAT fone easy texting!

  28. Glenda says:

Just thought I would share… I’ve had to replace this stupid matrix 3 times since Christmas through warrenty. screen goes black and have to re-boot the phone… this happened twice!
Yesterday I was outside talking and because of the humidty – condensation developed under the screen… IT WAS NOT RAINING… guess what — little dot in the back turned red so warrenty is voided…
I have offically been ripped off now… AT&T wants me to pay my $50 deductable and will only replace it with a Matrix… NO WAY

Pantech Matrix sucks, I had one for four months before it’s slider to reveal the keyboard started getting all wobbily. I upgraded to the first generation iphone and gave it to a friend when it broke… right in front of us.

  34. Jackson says:

i recently got a matrix and have been thrilled with it until recently. a piece on the inside has come lose and it will not slide to reviel the full keyboard. i dont know what to do!

  35. Tiffany says:

I’ve had this phone for a few days now, and i love it. I havent had any problems with it whatsoever. but is you arent very good at figuring out digital gadgets, i wouldnt reccomend it. is a little tought to navigate 4 someone who isnt very good at it. I’v figured out how to do pretty much anything with it, but the wireless bluetooth connection to my computer doesnt work. i dont know if its the computer or the phone though, so yea. but i can easily text, send emails, snap photos, videos, and i also figured out how to record your own ringtones/alert tones. if anybody needs help with this great phone, im the one to ask. just email me at princesstld@comcast.net if u need any help with the matrix :)

  36. Rachel says:

I have had my Pantech for about a month and it preforms beautifully. The full keyboard makes texting a breeze and the sound quality is excellent. Sliding the phone is simple and convenient.I have had no problems with this phone. I am very satisfied.

I have another phone with a keyboard but it got scratched so my parents said they will buy me the pantech matrix it will still have the same number and everything. I’m scared by some of your reviews but im gonna be really careful with it. my friend has it and nothing has happened to it soooooooooooooooooooo hop nothing happens to mine. I’m getting it in red and so far my friend says it’s awesome. I’m really excited about this phone but i’m going to follow my heart. I know im very dramatic. Please give me suggestions of any other phones. I like keyboards, thanks.

i have had this phone for maybe 2 months and sometimes when i slide it open in either position, the screen wont load. its just black. keys will light up, but screen wont load. audio sucks and it wont hold a charge more than a day. SUCKISH PHONE.

  43. Maddie says:

There used to be a problem with the matrix. The phone used to break but that was only when people were playing with the keyboard. Like when your waiting in line for something you just casually flip the keyboard open and close over and over. Thats bad for the phone. But what they recently did, i heard this from my good friend at the atandt store, is they sent all of them back and fixed the problem. I have the red matrix and it is a really good phone. It has GPS, a radio, you can get music, and many other things. Plus it slides and thats a really positive thing about it. I recommend this phone to anyone that wants it. Dont get the propel. It is the same price as the matrix and it sucks. Its cheap to! I hate it. Go with the Matrix. And dont worry it wont break they fixed that.

  44. Kaley says:

I agree! Do not get the propel, I had it for only 3 months and many pieces started breaking off and it cracked very easy. Eventually, the buttons on the phone just stopped working and it broke all together. I am thinking about getting the matrix and from what I’ve read, it seems like a pretty reliable phone.

  45. Jacob says:

I do a lot of outdoors stuff- hunting, fishing, pasture riding, etc.- and I need a phone that’s going to go through the steps without busting a screen or falling apart. Of course, being outdoorsy doesn’t mean we can’t have cool technology. Is the Matrix a good choice for me?

  46. Gina says:

The problem with the slider coming off was fixed. There used to be a metal braclet punched to the plastic underside of the qwerty slider. These were recalled because they kept coming off and the phone redesigned with a solid plastic slider. I had one of the new ones and loved it. Unfortunately, I dropped it in the mud and the warranty was void because of water damage. $279 for a new one. I bought a new one on ebay and thought I got a good deal, until the thing came apart after 2 weeks. Come to find out – some companies bought the lots of recalled Pantech Matrix and were selling them as “brand new with no battery cover.” I guess this was how the recalls were sold to them. Yep, I got one with the metal slider bracket. I went to the AT&T store and a very nice salesman showed me how to glue it back. I had to reglue it a couple of times, but the phone worked great. Just had to baby it. Prior to dropping it in the mud, the redesigned one worked great. I even dropped it from about 12 feet up, onto concrete, and it didn’t do anything but put a little scratch on the corner where it hit. It was very sturdy. The one with the metal bracket was a totally different story. Had to really be babied and reglued if dropped. I just kept it in a case. As long as you get the new version, it’s a great phone. It is hard to see the letters/numbers on the keys, but you get used to it pretty quickly. At least I did.

  54. Ashley says:

I have the pantech matrix in red. It is without a doubt my favorite phone that I’ve had, and I’ve had my share of phones. The QWERTY keyboard is probably my favorite part about it. This phone is lightweight and easy to use. The talk time and battery life is great also. If you are looking for a new phone I definitely suggest this. I send over 10,000 texts a month and this phone makes it really easy to do. You can text with the keyboard OR the number pad. You can take pictures, videos, and record your voice.. or whatever you want. I got this phone about five months and I honestly don’t think I’ve sent it down. I absolutley love it. GET IT! You won’t regret it :)

  55. Danielle says:

When i was first thinking about getting this fone, i wanted it so bad, nd i ddnt listn 2 any of the bad reviews it received. Honestly, this is the most gay retarded fone everrrrr! Eventually the light on mi QWERTY keypad burned out! IT BURNED OUT! now i have no light! Occasionally it flickers on and wrks only if it wnts 2, but not all the time. THEN! the QWERTY side of the fone jst totally lyk stopped wrking, it doesnt evn ackowledge it! so i can only use the number side of the fone! i hate this fone so much nd im taking it back 2 get the xenon. if ur thinking about getting this fone seriously consider this, bc i thought it was the best fone ever, but itz rly jst a piece of crap. I wish i cud go back nd tell myself wht ik now

The video really helped out and I am very excited about getting my phone. I hope mine works well, considering all the negative reviews posted. Sometimes it depends on how you treat your phone and the settings you set them on to insure good quality out.

I love how all these people are saying their phone sucks, and that stuff isn’t working… That just means you don’t take care of it. I’ve had mine for over 4 months now, and nothings wrong with it, I accually take care of it because I didn’t get insurance. The only reason people are saying ____ is wrong, or *this part* is broken and doesn’t work… it’s complete bull, all that means is you don’t take care of it. To the people who are thinking of getting this phone, I’d say get it, the matrix is an amazing texting phone and has great audio.

Wow, so Samantha, your ridiculous. I have had this phone since it came out back in november, and I dont have insurance either so i take really good care of my phones. But this phone still has many problems. The service goes up and down when im sitting in one spot. It says I have full service alot of the time and it still refuses to send messages. Plus when i slide it to the qwerty side with a menu open i have to exit it cause it sometimes it freezes. This is my second matrix, and it still sucks. I would not recommend this phone.

  67. zee says:

I have the black and green pantech matrix. The matrix is a fun little phone that’s defiantly a convenience for people who text a lot. my only complaint with the phone is that the battery life is horrible i have to charge it every night and half way through the day my battery is practically dead again! and the slider is a little loose but the phone seems pretty durable, ive dropped it countless times and its still working like a trooper. i would defiantly suggest getting one if you have the chance.

  68. mattt says:

ok so i hav this fone…. keypad works but its sooooo fucing glitchy!!!! i cant open i.m. and it has like no memory… i recomend this fone to old people with lots of money….. SO THEY CAN BUY A NEW FONE!!!!!!

  69. Laura says:

Great phone! I find the keyboard a little small, but it does the job. Nothing too extravagant, just a basic phone with a little extra!

  70. Scott says:

best phone i’ve had just wish i could know how to download the music. out of 10 i give it 100

  71. oshlee says:

someone please tell me now to get my ringtone for texts to play longer as well and also how to delete a message stuck in outbox?!?!?!?!!?! email me with any info at beautifull6disaster@yahoo.com

  72. q says:

can some one tell me how to make ur ringtone ur text tone?

  73. Anonymous says:

This is a great phone. I’ve had it for nearly a year, and have had no problems with it whatsoever. The only thing I don’t like is that the text ringtone only allows for about 4 seconds of audio and it vibrates very loudly. I drop it all the time and it never breaks. The older models broke because of a manufacturer issue, but my phone works great and is very sturdy. I recommend it greatly!

I want this phone really bad. I am getting this on my birthday on december 6th. But I am getting it on my party which is december 4th at the great wolf lodge which is a water park indoors. I CANT WAIT TO GET THE PHONE. MY FRIEND has it and says its’ awesome and I love playing with hers.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  75. mauricio says:

hey i got the blue matrix its a great phone love it but my cell doesnt save images sent by txt mesages does anybody have this proble and now how to fix it?

  76. Jason says:

I’ve had 4 of these phones in the past yr and a half. Im waiting for my contract to expire so that I can replace it. All of the phones I’ve had have issues when you switch from the number pad to the Qwerty keyboard, the screen flips about half the time. Also pantech does not make a synch software to synch your phone and computer. So every time I returned the phone all of my Calendar information, notes and some other information all had to be had entered. I’ve tried a few different types of software Ive found on line but havent found the right one yet. Also if your not really gadget minded the phone is hard to navigate. I’ve also had a number of issues not being able to save pictures I’ve recieved in texts even from other people with the matrix.

  77. bobby says:

THIS FONE SUX!!!!! I DROPPED IT ONCE AND THE SCREEN BROKE!! ITS NOT EVEN CRACKED ITS JUST BLACK BUT I CAN STILL HEAR IT WHEN I GET A TXT OR SOMEONE CALLS ME!!! I HATE IT!!!

  78. Jennifer says:

I absolutely hate this phone! Im really surprised to read so many good comments about it!
Ive had my phone for a little over a year and Ive tried to just deal with it but it freezes constantly and shuts off… maybe thats just a defect in my phone but its awful… the sound when someone calls is wonderful the clearity however isnt that good… sounds far away or like theres not good reception!
The camera is ok… but has to be really lit well or the pic wont turn out and I like the video i think it does a good job! I ABSOULUTELY LOVE THE FULL KEYBOARD! thats the best part.. i am a MASSIVE texter so its great! so overall quality its decent, i drop my phone quite a bit and its NEVER cracked!!
Well thats my opionin, hope this helps someone!

I’ve had the matrix for a year and i can’t wait to upgrade. i mean the matrix is alright, but to me it’s soooooo boring. Theres really nothing cool about it except it slides both ways. I really only use it for texting but it would sooo much better if it just had more features.

  80. Alexis D says:

I have the matrix in blue it is a great phone. did u kn its meant to slide over to the qwerty keyboard and from there it can also slide up, at the same time. so it can be opened up or over or both at the same time. it would be cool if it were touchscreen to tho. it shows it sliding both ways at once on the box, so i tried it and yes it works qwerty keyboard and phone key board at the same time. it is a pretty sweet phone.

  81. k says:

DO NOT get this phone. Front panel detaches from keyboard within a month of use without misusing it.

  82. Nicole Fortune says:

I recieved this phone for Christmas of 2008. Soon after I started having trouble with the phone recognizing the charger. I contacted the warranty dept. and was sent another charger. Then in Nov. 2009 the same problem occurred. This time warranty sent me a new phone, charger, and battery. After about two weeks the phone would not charge, so the warranty dept. sent me a new battery which took 2 weeks to get here. Got the new battery 12/31/09 and let it charged for 7 hours straight. The battery was 2/3 charged from the get go but after a day at work was almost dead. After letting it charge all night long, I woke up to a completely dead battery… I cant wait to switch phones… why am i paying for them to keep sending me broken stuff!!!!

  83. Abbey says:

This phone is really good for about 8 months. But then it “got wet” and would not read that I had a simcard inserted. I brought it in and of course it was my fault, I did nothing to get it wet, my friend also has the phone and after a year it did the same thing. It gets loose and is not very sturdy after a while. I think it has electrical malfunctions or something, like glitches, it always had them but got a lot worse with use.

  84. hi says:

    i have that PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i <3 it…

  85. Lily says:

I am going to get this phone really soon
does any one have any things to watch
    out for? :D i <3 the look!!

  86. KP says:

This phone is amazing! I have it and i LOVE it. I always get compliments on it. Its an awesome phone and the design is really cute

  87. Brittney Shortt says:

I HATE THIS PHONE!!!! at first, i love it! i am a massive texter, i am always texting! but after a while, this phone’s glitches started showing up. both keyboards arent supposed to open at the same time, and mine does. the vibrater is really loud, so i have to turn the vibrator off during school. :( it also turned off/on by itself. and even with the lock, it still butt-dialed people. the camera doesnt have a flash on it. you cant put a signature on your messages, and i still have yet to figure out how to set up my voicemail (but that may not be the phone?). the screen and back show fingerprints really easy and the front gets scratched easily too. i’ve read many reviews about the phone not charging, but i havent had that issue, yet. i’ve only had my phone for 4 months!!!! IT SUCKS! I WOULD NOT RECCOMENT IT! AT ALL!!! unless, by some wierd defect, you can stand glitches in a phone….and constant ones at that. hope that helped!!!!!
