Acer Aspire One D250 10.1" netbook D250-1165
Netbooks have become very popular, primarily due to their size and inexpensive pricing, but also due to the fact that the average person does not need a desktop replacement style laptop. Most people out there are not using their laptops for heavy work, the majority are using them for checking email, and browsing the internet, something which you don’t need an uber-power laptop for.
Acer has recently introduced their new lineup of their popular Aspire One series of netbooks, the D250, and that’s what I’ve got for review today. Specifically I have the AOD250-1165 model of netbook for review. This one features a 10.1″ LED backlit LCD display, along with an Intel Atom N270 CPU, a 3-cell battery, Windows XP, 160GB hard drive, 1 gig of ram and a built-in webcam, among other features it has. The Aspire One D250 is a very portable and lightweight netbook, coming in at only 2.4lbs with battery installed and only one inch thick.It’s a nice basic little netbook that gets the job done.
First up I’ve got a quick video unboxing for you, sort of quick anyway, about 5 minutes…
The Aspire One comes in a handy little box with a carrying handle. Inside you’ll find a documentation packet containing quit a bit of stuff, battery and charger.
The Aspire One I received for review is Sapphire Blue in color, the top of it is anyway, the rest is black. On the bottom we find three access doors.
On the left side is where you’ll find ethernet port, VGA output, USB and audio jacks, along with ventilation.
On the right side you’ll find two more USB ports, power input, kensington style lock and the card reader.
The Aspire One is very thin, about 1 inch thick, and it’s very nicely made overall. It’s also lightweight, weighing only 2.4lbs with the 3-cell battery installed.
The keyboard isn’t full sized, but that’s to be expected for a netbook. There’s a small touchpad that supports basic gestures. The screen in an LED backilit style LCD, and it’s glossy, something that I don’t care very much for, there’s quite a bit of reflection off of the screen.
There’s a webcam included on the top of the display what Acer calls a Crystal Eye Webcam, supposedly it’s optimized for low light chatting…. On the right side above the keyboard is where the power button is located, and on the left side we find the status LEDs.

To start off with, here’s a screenshot of the desktop, the Benches and screeshots folders are what I added, along with the shortcut for MWSnap.
It comes with eSobi, Google Desktop, McAfee Anti-Virus, Carbonite, Microsoft Works and the Acer Gamezone, along with a trial for Microsoft Office.

The Acer Gamezone is just time trials of games, nothing special really:
Carbonite can be annoying, it just pops up randomly to obscure whatever you’re trying to do, the Aspire One includes a 30-day subscription to it.
And the McAfee Anti-Virus is only a 90 day subscription, and it also is very annoying, popping up all of the time telling you this needs done or that needs done, it seems everyday there is a problem with it that needs your attention, and it has nothing to do with a virus.
I loaded up CPU-Z to check out the specs of the Aspire One, here’s the screenshots from it, listing everything:
The Aspire One only comes with 1gig of ram, which seems fine, but personally I would upgrade to 2gigs, especially when you consider you can grab a 2gig stick for about $25.
Using the small keyboard does take quite a bit to get accustomed to, the keys themselves are smaller, but after a bit I was typing fine, not full speed, but getting along…
The Aspire One boots up very fast, I was pleasantly surprised at the boot time, and all in all it seems snappy and quick to react once the OS is fully loaded.
The touchpad works well, it’s very responsive, though it and the buttons are a bit small, it takes a little time to get accustomed to. The gestures are a nice addition, but I never really use them, the only gestures I ever use on a touchpad are for scrolling.
Battery life seems great, that is for a 3-cell battery, Acer claims a 3 hour battery life depending on configuration and usage. I ran Battery Eater Pro v2.7 in Classic mode, it runs the netbook at 100% usage basically, which is something that most people aren’t going to be doing. For me the battery ran for 2 hours and 23 minutes until the Aspire One shut down automatically, that’s not bad for running at 100% load. I can easily see getting the rated 3 hours from the battery just doing ‘normal’ things like web browsing or word processing. Some people might not be happy with that, that’s the reason why you can get a larger battery, but the power supply is small, so you can easily take it with you if need be, just toss it in the bag with the Aspire One and you’re set.
Speaking of load, the fan kicked in of course to keep things cool, and I have to say it’s fairly quiet, I could barely hear it running, and the bottom of the Aspire One seemed cool to the touch, or at least not as hot as I expected, especially when compared to my Dell Latitude.
I mentioned the screen is glossy, personally I don’t care for it, it’s very reflective, and if you’ve got a light behind you it can be annoying. Using it in the sun is near impossible if the sun is shining directly on it, but outside in bright light it can be used with little problems.
The LED backlit LCD is nice though, the colors are bright and crisp and the blacks are black, pictures and movies look fine on it. The LCD does have several levels of brightness, and it seems to automatically revert to 50% brightness when powering off and then back on, I like my LCD to be bright, so having to adjust it every time I turn it on is a bit of a hassle, I don’t understand why it didn’t just stay at 100% brightness.
I had no problems with the wireless connection, it worked perfectly on my network, and range seemed fine for me, through walls and floors I had a good signal.
The speakers are ok, though lacking in bass as might be expected from a netbook, and depending on what surface you’re using the Aspire One on. One thing that bugs me about the speakers is that they are located on the bottom of the netbook, so depending on the surface you’re using it on they can get muffled. For example with the netbook sitting on your lap, your legs will absorb some of the sound, and also it should be noted the speakers really aren’t very loud.
Speaking of Hulu, streaming video was pretty good, though I did notice a bit of chop with it, and it’s not because of the streaming, I made sure the buffer was 100% full. It was still watchable though, just not 100% smooth all of the time.
For what it is, the Aspire One is a nice little netbook really.
Conclusion:
The Acer Aspire One D250 is a great little netbook, it’s small, thin, and lightweight making it very portable. Acer has done a nice job with the new Aspire One series of netbooks, most anyone will be happy with it. It’s great for doing light work, blogging, or just using it for entertainment.
The battery life is decent, though some might require longer life, for me though it’s fine.
The LCD is nice and bright, with good colors, and it can be used in brightly lit areas like outdoors, though it is glossy which can cause quite a bit of reflection.

Hey I use the computer all the time, and I am saving up for a netbook/laptop. I love to type and make videos on windows movie maker (Mostly typing). So Is this netbook good to typing easily?
hey, im looking at getting a laptop for highschool since i will be typing a lot of projects and i was wondering if this laptop is any good, since its price is so low. im only in my early teens, so i dont need anything fancy, i just want a good laptop for myself, that is easy to use. would this be the laptop that you reccomend?
Hi Caitlyn, yes I think it would be fine for someone in high school, it’s a nice lightweight netbook, perfect for basic stuff
and Mackenzie, typing on any notebook or netbook is going to be much different than typing on a regular keyboard, it will require a period of adjustment..
hey, i personally think that from your review of this product it is better than any that i have seen so far and very helpful but there is one thing i am very confused about it says that it has 160gb’s of hard drive and i may b just usto my regular desktop but where is the hard drive? does this computer really read and write cd’s/dvd’s or does it not? i know that i will need a flash drive for it b/c of my highschool senior project but what do i do about cd’s and dvd’s. and one last question. does this laptop wirelessly connect to the internet that is currently installed in your home i have comcast and will it just connect to that or do i need to contact comcast so they can connect it? and one more im on a question spree but what would be your best idea on a printer? or does it connect to the printer wirelessly in your home too?

Hey dear i have a new laptop of accer aspere one i am asking that how i can change its winows because it has no cd rom??
You can buy a seperate CD/DVD reader/re-writer than you can plug into the netbook via USB, that way you can play CDs/DVDs and change the OS. They’re really small and light (about the size of a CD player) and cost about £30-50.
i just got a notebook acer and it’s volume is low how can i turn it up i have use the volume key and it is still low other than it i love it i have a laoptop and another notebooke by asus and i love both notebooks more than i like my laptop please help me with the problem .
I have read some place else, that it has 6 cells battery, does it only has 3 cells ??

so agree with the person that talked about no optical drive… to install anything that requires dvd cd you need to buy an external optical drive.. which if not that expensive still add up.
fairly good and complete review. We bought ONE and most of the features work well… the 2 problems we run into were:
a) the “button” of the mouse is not as sensitive as most of laptops (this is a bit annoying so we solve it with a “regular” mini-mouse.
b) The biggest problem is the extra characters in the keyboard, much as a scientific pocket calculator, there are white characters, then light green and blue ones all in the same key; we could not find information about how to access a particular one!
For example, it does not matter which sequence of keystrokes we try (Ctrl, Alt, Shift, right-left, Function keys etc.) we still cannot access the question mark or the slash ?/ , various punctuation marks, and basically anything that has been placed at the sides of the keyboard and are the white characters.
We tried connecting another full size keyboard (regular, with just upper-lower case commands ) and guess what: same “extra” characters appeared on the screen even though they were not in the keyboard receiving the strokes. (for example, we want ?/ but we get ế. ế, which are the characters in light blue in the ONE)
I tried going into Symbols so then I can arrange the corresponding key sequence to get the desired character but I cannot get further than “insert Symbol/Character” because it won’t accept short cuts to be assigned -the window seems inactive.
I had searched for 2 days and I cannot find any reference to how to change the keyboard settings -no, from the Control Panel there is minimal info about the keyboard; and the users’ manual has good, clear info but does not touch the subject of the extra characters.
I think that perhaps is a matter of changing the settings somewhere, but I cannot figure out How Or What.

I read your review here and i would love to see a site thats actually offering the 2 gig ram sticks for this machine for 25 bucks its more like 45 to 50.. or did u just make that number up? (actually all sarcasim aside if there really is some one selling the memory for 25 bucks pls post it.
I have this netbook and I like it. It does what I want but of course it does not replace
my desktop computer. For instance, I record HD video and use this Acer to backup the files to. That’s no problem, but don’t try to play such files, it won’t work. The processor cannot handle this kind of speed. I don’t mind, it is only for backup though. As mentioned in the review, it comes with a lot….I say a LOT of garbadge software installed so it will take you a few hours to get everything organized and delete the rubbish Acer installed on it. I didn’t like the way you can simulate a mouse so I got a USB mouse right away.
Alltogether : I like it…….!
I bought one and installed Mandriva 2010.0. I have an issue with the Ethernet, I had to buy a usb to Ethernet adapter, a small price to pay to get rid of windoze. I’ve heard changing the HD to a 7200 rpm one makes it a lot faster. I also switched to a usb mouse because I play Quake 3 and the old classic Quake. This is a nice little netbook. Oh I also bought a CD /DVD player too.
I liked it too but the keyboard is quite small..
And it randomly hangs which is a big turn off.
I’ll install windows 7 tonight and see if it become more stable.

Catalina Colaci, I have the same problem with mine and am getting totally frustrated trying to figure out how to resolve the keyboard “issue”. To the point where I rarely use it other than to surf. Hopefully someone here will help us.
as for the ram costing $25 for 2gigs… try NewEgg that’s where I got mine, it was $24.99 with free shipping so it was $25 basically…
I bought this netbook 20 days earlier. Acer aspire one D250-1Bw white. It has Atom N280 processor with 1GB DDR2 RAM. I’ve installed 2GB Transcend DDR2 667 RAM without any problem. It has a nice tiny RAM access door. You can install only a single RAM module. I upgraded it’s BIOS downloaded for acer’s support site, without any problem. My acer came with 6 cell battery, which can deliver 7 hours of battery backup. There are two types of 6 cell battery available. 1 for 6 hours, and the other for 7 hours. I always getting 6hours+ battery backup. The only thing I don’t is it’s speaker. It’s not loud at all. But the mic works great. It can pickup very clear sound. Webcam is also good. Cam made by Liteon. You can easily adjust brightness, contrast etc. LCD picture quality is astounding. It can produce very nice and vivid color. But for this you need to adjust it’s settings. Set gamma and brightness to it’s minimum, then set contrast to “51″. Then adjust display light by pressing “Fn+arrow keys”. It came with windows XP home edition pre-installed. But I ditched that OS. I installed Win XP Pro, Windows server 2003 Enterprise, and Redhat linux enterprise 5. That’s all are pirated. I’m a network engineer, and I’m doing this for my study purpose. But it’s illegal that’s for sure. Everything works great, without slowing down my netbook. Only problem I found is no display driver for windows server 2003. I’ve checked intel’s site and they didn’t release VGA driver for 945chipset for windows server 2003. So it’s not the fault of Acer. It has atheros ethernet NIC and 802.11g wireless NIC built-in. They all work gr8. Bluetooth works fine too. I found it has a very good and rigid build quality. I really liked it. And highly recommend everyone to buy this netbook. I really feeling good and very satisfied after buying this netbook.

I like my Acer Aspire 250-1165. But do have some question about the touch pad, I get how to scroll with the right side, but can’t figure out how to use the pinch action zoom and page flip. It happens when I least expect it and drives me nuts!! Is there a good manual about the keyboard? And can this model be hooked to a cd/dvd player? Thanks for all the info. I bought the Acer Aspire One 10.1 on Ebay used. It is in great shape but I need advice on a couple of things.
First off I bought this for my 16 year old son for Xmas to take back and forth to my house and his father’s. Neither of us have wireless modems. Should we each buy a wireless router or should I get my son an “air card”? I really wanted to be economical and thought he’d “pick up” signals from our houses-not here-or there-neghbors are locked shut.
Other issue-I have no warranty -obviously should I buy from Square Trade a $40.00 warranty?

Just bought the aspire one netbook and thought it was great at first. I opened it up and got it going but didn’t know about the registration right away. I used it for a few days no problems what so ever and today I opened it up and a blue screen popped up. I called the tech support and a lady registered my computer for me. She then proceeded to tell me that because I saw the blue screen that my computer is going to crash one day. I don’t know if I should go ahead and return it or do you think this blue screen came up because I didn’t register it right away?? please help!

How do you get certain websites to display properly on this netbook? My daughter likes going to games.com and the games won’t display fully so she can’t play them. I thought it was IE8, but it’s the netbook. Also, webkinz.com doesn’t display properly on IE8. I downloaded chrome and webkins works fine, but games.com only works with IE. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I own an AcerOne Laptop and while it is good for basic stuff. I’ve had to send it back twice and restore it twice. The windows update crashes the wireless. I would deeply recomend a usb dvd drive for backing up the original system. When I went to fedex to send it back the first time I was told that alot of them go back. Other than that it can be pretty powerful with VLC and Limewire (if you know what your doing on limewire) as well as yahoo messager for web cam chats. Of coarse I have the d150.
We bought this netbook for our 6 year old daughter for Christmas specifically so she could use it to play on the Webkinz site and use it for educational purposes (learning games). We are considering returning it because she cannot use it. For example, the Webkinz site does not open properly in the window so you cannot scroll down on the site. Any suggestions? Is there something we need to load so that it will work properly for the reasons we bought it? Saw a similar question from someone else who said they loaded “Chrome”…not sure what this is. Can you suggest a fix for our problem?
Did anybody ever figure out the green/blue key issue? I’ve managed to type a questions mark by pressing Shift + 6 but it would be really nice to use the ? and / from where they should be.

i hope someone can help..i just got my acer aspire one d250, but i have a problem, the extra features on the thouchpad wont work. i can only use mouseclick, moving around and dubbleclick, nothing else…where can i fix that or should i go to the store?
I had the same problem with using the ? and the slash…make sure that your ketboard is set to US english and not the Canadian English and it’ll work like a normal question mark.
You can usually find the keyboard setting by your clock on your menu bar at the bottom of the screen

Change your keyboard to US english and not Canadian English then your question mark will work like it should… as for the blue keys I think you just press the function (Fn) key to get those to work
It took a lot of research but thats what websites told me and i tried it with someone’s acer and it worked wonders

Hello, I have the Acer Netbook (Aspire One) and I have tried everything to increase the volume. Even while wearing headphones the sound is low. I understand that the speakers are on the bottom of the Computer and that does have an effect on the loudness but it should improve with headphones greatly. I know how to change the volume settings in Windows and inthe Control Panel and they are all at their highest levels but the sound remains pretty low even while wearing the headphones. Please help, thanks!

I bought the D250 and immediately upgraded the ram to 2gigs, installed Google Chrome, and I’m using the US English keyboard…… no problems at all, and the Google Chrome runs way faster than IE …… nice little laptop for the $$

it is a really nice netbook
I got this laptop as a Christmas present, and I love it. My only issue is that my cousin was playing with it and broke my keyboard; usually, keyboards are quite easy to replace on Netbooks, but I can’t find a replacement for my model anywhere. I have the exact one depicted here. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement for a black, D250 10.1″ netbook?
Bought the acer 1 netbook for my wife for xmas , very pleased generally however when using word or browsing it appears to hang for a second or 2 about every 12 to 15 seconds , very annoying if your in the middle of typing as you have to wait for it to catch up and often causes the internet pages to run slow . its only used for light work and im sure this should not be happening , any ideas?
Purchased this laptop in December – having ongoing issues with battery even after replacement.
Anyone else having an issue?
After powering down the laptop (completely off, not standby/hib), the battery loses charge. At 100%, it is flat after 4 days of not been touched. Laptop replaced a week ago after confirmed fault and there still seems to be a drain issue. Going to see if it still drains when completely removed battery, but curious if anyone else has this issue?
We’re having the same problem as Amy’s Jan 2 posting – wanted the kids to be able to play Webkinz, but the loading and scrolling aren’t working properly. We tried adjusting the resolution, but that didn’t help. Any ideas?

I noticed that others were having issues with the blue keys. Try hitting Fn and then F11. That will allow you to use the 10key function on the keyboard. Push Fn and F11 to use the letters instead.
Hi, i just got the laptop for my 20 bday, and i really wonted a tiny one for school and traveling, but i would not have bought my self an acer- i own an HP and my brother has VIAO. Is acer a good brand? ive had some problems with my HP- mainly it hangs and doesnt wake up. With the Acer the installed programs are annoing-plus i hate trial anything, once its over im not gonna buy it, so i dont see the point in just using for 30 days. Im having the same problems with the keyboard – minly the ? mark- i cant seem to get it to be an actual question mark, its always an e with a cap on top. Also i would like to know ho to upgrade to a 2 gig.. does that mean i have to get a new laptop or i can upgrade the one i have. Oh and any suggestions on volume?? its really quiet.

Oh you mean the two new USB ports on the right side that worked for 3 days and now since I am over 14 days to exchange because I was working out of town, the best CompUSA can do is give me an in store credit so I can turn around and pay now $40 more for the same exact computer! Do I look that stoopid? CompUSA sucks, steer clear of them!

I just bought the new Acer Aspire One netbook and it is up and running BUT there was no keyboard manual included in the box so I am having some difficulty in figuring out which keys are for what purpose.
Has Acer produced any such manual for this?
i have this computer , i like it sometimes, the bad parts would be, the battery doesnt last long if unpluged, nd mine has crashed so many times, another bad quilty is when your watching videos they sometimes like skip and their voices make a weird noise, and lastly there is no CD drive =(…SOme good thing about this computer is the size its small and you can take it with you no problem, cute, and if you have wireless internet its fast. I wouldnt recommend this to any college student, im going to college and i have to get a larger better laptop but for beginners i think its ok. hope this helps =)
I got a D250 last week purely for a personal travelling reasons (reading mail, connect GPS and download pictures from my camera) and up to now is extremely happy with it. In many ways it exceeded my expectations ito quality and functionality in such a way that I’m thinking of using it for business travelling also.
There is however a bunch of crap installed on it, but 30 minutes in the add/remove section resolved that problem.
I’ll even suggest doing a clean install and just loading the Webcam driver, system driver, sound driver and screen driver (all downloadable from Acers website)

I’m having the same trouble with the laptop battery. Everytime I power down at 100%, the battery gradually loses its charge and eventually flatlines. Does anybody have a trouble with this? This laptop was only purchased a few months ago so I don’t think its the battery’s fault and John also mentioned that he tried to replace the battery and he still had this problem.

Who needs a CD/DVD drive when everything is online today? USB-sticks are also more convenient to use than old style CDs.

I bought a Acer 250 notebook from Sweden and The keyboard has some swedish letters which I am unable to type. Does someone have any idea of how to use the same.
