disappointed on Binocular Performance

  • Excerpt: I bought these hoping for a 12 power Image stabilized Binoculars, that I would be able to video what wildlfe I found. But when compared them to the 8x binocular that I am currently using, I don't believe the Sony Dev-50 picked up as much details as my current Binoculars. I believe the field of view at 12 power optical was less than 20% of my current binoculars. I returned them for refund.
  • Pros: Compact

Excellent for video

  • Excerpt: I ordered the DEV-50 despite having seen some very negative reviews since they seemed like they would meet my needs. I have been EXTREMELY happy with them - however, as the negative reviews indicate, they are not ideal for everyone. The main thing to remember is that they are primarily a video camcorder. They are fairly poor at stills and not as good a binocular as a good optical binocular. But for video they are great if you need long reach or macro.
  • Pros: 60p Video, Always Ready, Close Focus, Quality Lenses
  • Cons: Only Jpg Stills

Great idea, poorly executed

  • Excerpt: To be able to spot a bird, for example, at low power, zoom in while keeping it in view, and then take a high quality picture or video for identification or documentation would be of great value. I compared the DEV-50 to a very good pair of low/mid price range binoculars, the Vanguard Endeavor, and found the image quality of the Sony product substantially less. As a camera, I compared it to my four year old Sony DSC-HX1, which was about $500 new.
  • Pros: Good Idea
  • Cons: Binoculars Image Quality, Camera Image Quality, Not Mac Computer Friendly, Not Waterproof, Price

So disapointed

  • Excerpt: I can not believe Sony brought this product to the market. The photo capabilities of these binoculars are totally unacceptable. I purchased the unit based on Sony's advertisements which in the past have been reliable. At first I could not believe what I was seeing and thought that I was using the binoculars incorrectly. After reading the manual again, the results were the same. These binoculars will not replace your camera as a photo device.
