Sticky cover

Tom, B&H Photo
17 June 2014
  • Excerpt: These are hard to rate. Optically they are very good and the image stabilizer works well so functionally they get 5 stars. The problem is that after about 2 years the black case starts to disintegrate. It gets all sticky and rubs off on everything. By the time we sent them in to the repair center they were 4 years old and a real mess. They were out of warranty and canon wanted almost the cost of a new pair to fix them.
  • Pros: Close Focus, Compact, Quality Lenses
  • Cons: Poor Construction

These do not last

Bloke, Canon
20 February 2014
  • Conclusion: My first pair of these binoculars were great when new. After about 4 years the image stabilizing mechanism froze. Although I live about one mile from the coast, the Canon Factory Service said that they were corroded. Repairs would be almost the cost of a new pair...which I bought. Now, after about 5 years the second pair has stopped working and the exterior plastic case has turned soft and sticky.
  • Pros: light weight very sharp for size.
  • Cons: not durable, not the quality one expects from canon

Good but with issues...

  • Excerpt: On the positive side the optics and the IS are great giving a clear view of what you are looking at. On the negative side the build quality is poor. The anti-slip finish stars wearing off immediately (even though they are lightly used and carried in my camera bag) and before long both the eyepieces came off. Although these are great binoculars they are let down by the build quality.
  • Pros: Quality Lenses

Chromatic Aberration?

Halibut, B&H Photo
16 January 2008
  • Excerpt: Was surprised, knowing Canon's reputation for its optics, to see a red fringe or flare around bright white objects in sunlight - specifically the head of a bald eagle. All other features are very good, especially the stabilization.
  • Pros: Stablization
  • Cons: Red Fringe

Slightly underwhelmed...

inky, Amazon
4 October 2014
  • Summary: Swayed by excellent reviews everywhere, I decided to break the bank and go for Canon's Image Stabilising technology when choosing a new pair of binoculars. As you'd expect from Canon, image quality is excellent, they're really pin sharp. And battery life on the two AAs used for the image stabilising is good. Additionally, some reviews have commented upon their weight - I didn't find them as heavy as I'd expected, probably comparative to a digital bridge camera.

it is extremely annoying. I am not sure if that ghosting effect ...

  • Summary: I purchased 2 pairs of these and with both of them I have a ghosting effect around the subject I am looking at, it is extremely annoying. I am not sure if that ghosting effect is normal (for an IS bin ) or if both my bins are defective. I did read some reviewers had the same problem, I was hoping I would not but I do. But love the IS function.
