Stable, full-featured workstation

Chris L., Newegg

  • Summary: This is an excellent foundation for a very powerful system at a great price point
  • Pros: Good price, excellent motherboard + support from SuperMicro, quiet, lots of PSU connectors, rock-solid, good support for ES CPUs (X9DAi is widely supported and you can downflash to older BIOS revisions). Lots of connectors on the PSU.
  • Cons: Heatsinks aren't included, which is annoying. I fit two XIGMATEK Gaia SD1283 heatsinks (currently $32/each) without an issue.

Minimal. Doesn't come with heatsinks!

  • Summary: While the photos on NewEgg do indicate that heatsinks aren't included the images on Supermicro's site are very misleading. Additionally I've purchased dozens of Supermicro barebones server and workstation kits and I can't remember a single one that was designed to work with server-class CPUs that didn't include the required heatsink solution. This is a bad trend!
  • Pros: Relatively compact, relatively clean internal configuration, high quality motherboard and power supply, good selection of front ports.
  • Cons: This case is very minimal. not cheap, just very, very basic. The hard drive mounting is very primitive, and there are absolutely no frills like mounting for 2.5" hard drives, etc. The included cable management accessories are nice, but that's it. Since none of the CPUs designed for this barebones come with included heatsinks you'd better add at least an additional $60 or so to get proper heatsinks.
