Summary: I hate to admit this, but I once paid $1,5000 dollars for a Theta DAC in the '90s that wasn't as good as today's bargain priced TEAC UD-H01. OK, the Thetas weren't built in China and they didn't have access to the better chips from Texas Instruments (now Burr Brown), but they had big expensive...
Pros: Price, sound, simplicity, and beats the mega-buck ego enhancing DACS
Cons: Obviously not as transparent and good in the bass as other big buck DACS, but come on it's low priced
Summary: This is a fabulous DAC. It actually has two (2) DAC's built-in, which operate at a very impressive and rarely-seen 32 bit level (not 24 bit). Try finding those specs in another DAC priced under a thousand bucks... much less priced under three hundred as this one is.
Pros: TWO (2) DAC's built-in, which operate at a very impressive and rarely-seen 32 bit level (not 24 bit). That's unheard of at anywhere near this price level... or even double this price level. Physical build-quality is top-rate... finely machined aluminum and beautiful polished piano-finish top.
Cons: The headphone amp is not very powerful. It will only drive my low-impeadence (easy-to-drive) SHURE 1440 headphones to a "moderately loud" level at its "maximum" volume level for headphones, before it tops-out.
Summary: This DAC sounds great!! I am using the USB input from my PC running Windows XP Professional. It took less than 10 minutes to get working, including the time to download the drivers from the TEAC website. I am using the DAC to power a pair of Sennheiser RS170 wireless headphones.
Summary: For an entry level DAC this is a great unit. I did a lot of research prior to purchasing this and it paid off. Only problem was I wasn't getting optical out of the Mac Mini port. After calls to both Apple & Crutchfield, who were very helpful yet stumped, I realized I had plugged into the wrong port.
Summary: Just to put things in perspective this little gem was added to a Cambridge NP30 streamer (Reduced to £200) to replace my Roksan Caspian CD player (£1,200 back in the day) and in all fairness the sound from the Cambridge alone was reasonable but a tad stuffy and not a patch on the old CD player but...
