Sony NAS-SC55PKE review

18 February 2009
  • Excerpt: PC a no-no? The Sony NAS-SC55PKE is a self-contained, 80GB music streamer , with one main unit and one spare for a second room. You can even add up to three more units for around £200 each and turn your whole house into one thumping music box! So, is it a dream streamer or all washed up?
  • Pros: Don’t have a PC, but still want to stream tunes your house? No need to fret, Chet, you can plump for this multi-room streamer system, consisting of a main unit with 80GB of hard disk space (to store your collection) and an additional self-contained player that links up wirelessly. Sound quality is superb, and there are tasty bonuses in the form of a DAB tuner, built-in iPod dock and smartypants playlist generator – xDJ. Just select a few tracks and it’ll cobble togeth...
  • Cons: Setting the system up is a herculean task requiring far more cables and fiddling than seems necessary. The player’s Wi-Fi adapter, for instance, comes in a separate box that needs its own power supply – why not just integrate it into the player, Sony? Plus the menu system’s a labarynthine cafuddle. Also, the price is also scarily high.
