When service is needed take a long nap
Richard J., Newegg
1 March 2014
Summary: I had a situation with a pc where it would not do daily updates. I would force a manual update and then even those failed. I opened a case with BD and waited...and waited...and waited...until I could wait no more. I did a repair and got the dreaded "smime3.dll missing" message. I finished the repair, rebooted and launched again. Since then only one instance of not doing the update (which I manually did again).
Pros: With rebate it was free
Cons: Issues with not doing daily updates. Support takes a long time.
Cons: I uninstalled this program within 4 hours. There is a constant popup that wants me login to My Wallet which I don't want to use this feature. From what I have read there is no way of getting around this. Glad I'm only out $12.
Summary: Had to remove product and complained to Bitdefender customer service (via my account on their website). First received an irrelevant form letter asking for log files and screen shots (not available, because I uninstalled the product completely). Repeated the details of the situation and got an apology. Now waiting for them "to get back to me shortly". Would be nice if Newegg refunded my money, even though it's been a while...
Pros: Very polite and prompt customer service.
Cons: Could not use because it consistently crashed Internet Explorer 8 (latest version available for my older PC running Windows XP). Unable to evaluate otherwise.
Pros: Basically the only AV that catches everything. You have to set it to "Aggressive" for this to be possible. It does everything it says. I used to have Norton, then switched McAfee and AVG. Then I switched to Bit-defender. It has detected viruses on my old Backup CDs that I had created while using other AV scanners. 5 years and none of the backup CDs I created while running Bit-defender has ever shown a virus after been scanned by different PCs. Also has the world's bes...
Summary: I tried to get help from BD's tech group on the install issue and I have to say it was near worthless. Not timely and not helpful.
Pros: Simple installation on 2 of 3 machines. Monitors but doesn't seem to take up a lot of system resources.
Cons: Install issue on one machine. When I told it to go ahead and do updates during the install it failed. After trying 3x I told it not to download and install updates and everything went fine. I then went back to updated after the install and all was well.
Summary: Every time I try to do something, this window pops up wanting me to log in to their servers. You cannot turn it off. I do not want to sign up for any online account and do not need their "cloud" services. I have also tried to exclude certain files from being tagged as a virus and the settings do not work. I will list it in the exclude list and the next time I try to run it, Bitdefender deletes it.
Pros: Easy to install. Three PC license. It was free with the holiday rebate.
Summary: I recommend Bitdefender Internet Security 2014
Pros: Great Value. After rebate I paid $4.99 for the Value Edition. Very transparent system with great auto update and background scanning features. Scans constantly, but if you want a full-system scan it's no faster, or slower, than most. Seems powerful and I've had absolutely no issues!
Cons: "Auto Pilot" mode allows the user to be completely hands off, however, if you want to fiddle with it manually, it isn't the most intuitive interface. No problem at all, just a little quirky 'til you become accustomed.
