Summary: I bought this Yamaha RX-V861 receiver for my home theater set-up in my new vacation home. I have the same receiver in my primary residence and have had it for about 5 years and still love it. Plenty of power, HDMI and sound options galore. You can't beat it for this price!
Sound quality at it's best for a dedicated enthusiasts.

Summary: Using as a multi room 9.1 system. When set up correctly this receiver couldn't sound better. I am using it with the extra two front speakers. These are called presence speakers for front surround effects that go deeper in to sound tracks.
Summary: My husband bought this receiver; however, I have really been enjoying it. The sound is absolutely fantastic!!!! You can hear every little tinkle of sound. Was listening to some orchestra music and I've never heard sounds like this receiver put out. I felt like I was sitting right in front of the orchestra listening. And movies are just as good. You can't go wrong with this receiver.
Summary: Great product with auto setup! The remote is fairly easy to use and if you choose to manually set up the speaker output, distance, etc. it is easy to do so. The wiring set up is simple and most importantly, it does output great quality! Highly recommend this unit!
Summary: The unit is reported to be a top rated one and it probably is. It will do so much, but the instructions are not written for the novis. Hooking up the speakers is easy. It is after that when the information becomes confusing. Hopefully I will soon get the surround sound working properly and the extra expense of this unit will be realized.
Great receiver if you don't need lots of HDMI inputs

Summary: Great sound quality - warm, like other Yamaha receivers. Lots of tailoring options for the right sound. I have mine coupled with a full 7.1 system using Boston Acoustics speakers and a Velodyne subwoofer in a dedicated theater room. The sound is fantastic. I am using the receiver for HDMI switching from my Sony BluRay player and Mitsubishi HDTV. Also have a Wii attached and am switching conventional video through the receiver to output on the HDMI to the TV.
Summary: Great amp for the money. But do not upscale! Your HDTV already does it and does a better job than 99% of the receivers out there. Love Yamaha receivers. This is my 3rd. Looked at Onyko and Denon, and Yamaha really blows them away. You must read the manual and set this up correctly. The YPAO works perfect and makes the setup that much easier. I wish it had more HDMI inputs as my TV only has 2, and I wish it had a HD radio tuner, but they did add that to the RX-V863.
Summary: This receiver arrived in its original sealed box, there was nothing to indicate that it was a refurb. This is a high quality unit with excellent sound. Once it is set up it is very easy to use, but getting to that point is tricky. The instructions are not the clearest and some of the menus are confusing at first. The remote is ok but if you want it to control everything in your home theater it's not the best. The receiver has an array of features including HDMI.
Summary: You would never know this is a refurbished item. Great receiver (albeit not the easiest to set-up – count on reading the manual), loads of features and plenty of power. However the remote is not as good. It has hard to read small identically shaped buttons and no backlight. My receiver has one problem which I haven’t resolved yet; when I connect my laptop to the receiver (with the laptop connected to AC power) the speakers have a hum.
Summary: I purchased the Yamaha 861 to replace an older Yamaha receiver that had been doing home theatre duties. I decided to upgrade to take advantage of simpler switching due to the 861's two HDMI inputs with one output to my 46" 1080p LCD HDTV. The 861 supports the 1.2 version of HDMI but that shouldn't be an issue because all but the very newest HDTV's use that standard as well.
