Yamaha RX-V4600 Receiver Review

22 July 2005
  • Summary: As with the tradition of all Yamaha A/V receivers I have had the pleasure of reviewing, the RX-V4600 lives up to the Yamaha name. Its feature packed, excellent processing capabilities stand out at this price point. Its improved amplifier performance over the RX-V2500 ( see test results ), particularly when driving low impedance loads, opens it up to a bigger loudspeaker market while also making it somewhat more predictable sounding when driving the tougher loads.
  • Pros: Three (3) HDTV-compatible component video inputs, Accurate YPAO automatic speaker setup, Presence channels & Yamaha DSP, System memory with 6 storage options (2 on remote), Dialogue lift with Presence channels, Independent volume trim for each input!, Excellent fidelity in all modes of operation, HDMI 1.1 Video and multi-channel audio, Active i.LINK, HD Radio
  • Cons: Auto Setup had inconsistent results for PEQ and bass management, No YPAO below 62.5Hz or on the subwoofer, Remote button labels limit usefulness of backlight, No analog video upconversion to HDMI, Cannot engage Presence channels and Surround back channels even with the addition of an external amplifier
