I bought the Yamaha HTR-5940 used. It is replacing an Onkyo TX-SR503 that was acting up on me. I chose this HTR-5940 because I already have an HTR-5830 (also used) as my office computer sound system. After experiencing the 5830, the 5940 was a nearly natural choice. That worked out beautifully. The sound quality of the 5940 leaves the Onkyo behind. I think the Onkyo was in trouble in several areas for a while. As soon as I got the Yamaha set up and running, an awful lot of problems in my system were gone.
The nice thing about the HTR-5940 (and the HTR-5830) is that it has lots of set up and control flexibility. But, that is also the downside. Most functions have to be done manually _ be it initial set up or sound changes along the way. Initially, I thought that was annoying. But, having control over the sound functions is a real advantage. The instruction booklet very complex but very helpful _read it carefully. Despite the "learning curve" I'm already enjoying this receiver. Overall, I am amazed at its sound quality and flexibility.
