  • Summary: I had a Marantz for 10 years and finally gave up trying to work around not having HDMI in/out on my stereo. Bought this after serious research and I am especially impressed with the pass-thru mode.

  • Summary: The STR-DN840 A/V Receiver worked right out of the Box with no problems . The built in tuner has very good sensitivity for locking in the FM station. The picture quality is excellent and the surround sound is the best that I have heard.

So far, so good

  • Excerpt: I bought this Sony STR-DN840 a/v receiver to replace an Onkyo unit that was damaged during an electrical storm. I haven't had it up and running for very long, but so far, all is well with this unit. Hooking it up was very straight forward and the sound quality with my old Cerwin Vega speakers is very good! Like I said, I haven't had it long, but my initial impressions are good and I'd recommend this Sony product to anyone considering an a/v receiver in this price range.
  • Pros: Clear Sound, Easy To Set Up, Great sound quality, Interfaces Well With TV, Intuitive Controls, Thundering Bass

Great entry-mid level reveiver

  • Summary: Wanted a decent surround sound system, but didn't want to drop the equivalent of a mid-sized car on it. This unit hit the sweet spot. Has a lot of the more advanced features (bluetooth for connecting to a phone, wi-fi, etc) without going crazy (and costing much more). The auto set-up is nice. Plug in your speakers, put the included mic in the middle of your room, and let it do the work of balancing the speakers.

Very easy to install.

  • Summary: I don't know enough about sound to criticize or commend the EasySetup audio. Seemed to work nicely. FM sound is excellent. BlueRay DVD and Directv HD sound are excellent. Switching between Tuner/DVD/Directv and Local TV go smoothly. Ability to switch to local TV from Directv goes much better than my Yamaha AV receiver did. Speaker setup and network went fine. Played with the Blue tooth to listen to an audio book on my Iphone 5 and that went even quicker than I hoped for.

This thing has some awesome features

  • Summary: I replaced a Harman Kardon AVR 335, which I thought was pretty nice. This Sony STR-DN840 blows it away. I replaced it to get HDMI ports... not really expecting much of a noticeable improvement in sound quality. I'm powering the same Harman Kardon surround speakers with a Velodyne MicroVee subwoofer. The Sony, outputting 150W per speaker vs 75W for the HK Receiver, is clearer and just sounds incredible.
