Summary: Sound is good, setup is easy. After an hour on the phone with Crutchfield's wonderful tech support, we found I had a defective receiver (ARC was not working). Received a replacement very quickly. Second one is buzzing when plugged in even with nothing hooked up to it and the power off. Waiting for the 3rd one now.
Summary: This receiver is everything I need in an AV receiver. I bought it after seeing positive reviews on the internet showing its extensive connectivity ability, multiple HDMI inputs etc. I have had the receiver for two weeks and everything worked fine until yesterday. The receiver has known issues passing the video from an HDMI input from the cable TV box to the HDMI out to the TV. I only found this out after looking at the Sony website.
Pros: Great connectivity through WiFi, Bluetooth, airplay etc. Very good audio. Good graphical user interface for setting up and controlling the receiver.
Cons: Known problem with connectivity to cable TV boxes. Video out is a flickering scrambled picture. Sony has issued one software update but has not resolved the problem
Summary: After reading several reviews here and online, I decided to give the DN1040 a shot. I was upgrading from the Sony DA3200ES (absolutely fantastic sound quality) because I needed the extra HDMI inputs to connect my various devices (Directv, WiiU, PS4, PS3). Although it may have been a faulty unit, I noticed that there was some HDMI switching issues - primarily when switching from a progressive to interlaced signal.
Summary: The unit seems too complex for its own good. The firmware has some quirks that make it frustrating to use: e.g. getting to the built in settings menu is not straightforward.
Pros: Plenty of digital inputs and built-in features.
Cons: No optical digital output -- many modern speaker systems ONLY have an optical input. No S-Video input for legacy sources. The built in internet services like Pandora can't send sound out through the HDMI output to the TV if that is a requirement; the "AMP+TV" sound routing setting is not persistent -- you have to re-select it each time you turn on the unit. This mode is a requirement for me.
Summary: I purchased this receiver to replace an Onkyo with a failing HDMI board (common problem for Onkyo). The receiver was fast and easy to setup. The auto speaker calibration didn't work out for me, the cord for the microphone was about 2 feet too short to put it where I needed it (about 18 ft) and even then it didn't do a very good job with the calibration.
Summary: EDIT: I've now received my 2nd STR-DN1040. The original unit had significant HDMI issues. The new receiver, however, has absolutely no issues (so far). My original review was 2 stars. I'm bumping it up a star for now. If the problems don't return, this system will receive 4 stars (never 5), due to it's inconsistent manufacturing. If my first system had no issues, I'd love it and it would easily deserve 5 stars.
