Summary: I was concerned over the negative reviews when I purchased this unit. It’s been over a month, and all is OK at this point. I was able to use the auto config to get the 5.1 setup in 10 min. My unit sits between DirecTV and the 65” monitor (with bad audio), it now has a great audio with everything I watch. So far, I have to use the SONY remote to power up this unit, and use the DirecTV remote to do everything else. I’m sure it’s about selecting the correct code.
Great receiver. If looking for a sub $500.00 receiver, definitely check tho

Summary: Great receiver. I had read about this receiver on c/net.com. While c/net listed the DN840 as the better value, when I saw that the reduced price put the DN1040 on par with the DN840, I opted for the former. The design of the unit is clean and not overly cluttered as some receivers. My receiver was replacing my old Yamaha. I will admit that its taking me awhile to get used to the minimal display on the DN1040.
Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS RECEIVER. After reading the bad reviews where people had issues with defective units, I almost did not order this model, but then I did because I figured that the one I ordered would be fine... Well, it wasn't. It had the same issues other people experienced(flashing screen, digital static, couldn't get the signal loaded fast enough to not try over and over unsuccessfully), Sony was inept and unable to help with anything and offered me a repair on a brand...
Summary: UPDATE: After the newest software update my DN1040 is working -for the most part- quite well. Some random notes: The good news is that I am hearing music differently with this receiver. Nuances that I've never noticed before. And when the HDMI works it works well. Airplay is awesome. Using the DN1040 to remote my iPod has some issues. Auto-on is a very nice feature, I turn my Directv on and the receiver comes to life.
Excerpt: This receiver not only provides awesome sound, but the user interface is great as well. It has about everything you could wish for, plenty of HDMI inputs, wireless, bluetooth and more. Well worth the price!
Pros: Easy To Set Up, Good Power Output, Good Remote Control, Great Sound Quality
Summary: Works well...when it works. Took a gamble and ended up with the dreaded HDMI handshake issues, even after updating firmware. Not satisfied with the "restart the system" recommendations by Sony to get it to work. Ended up returning the unit (within the 30d window) and going with a Yamaha unit instead.
Summary: I didn't buy from Amazon, but I had to comment and let people know that what ever issues this receiver was having it's been fixed. I love this thing. I have a Xbox one, 64" Samsung 8500 3d Plasma tv and a 3D Blu-ray player connected to it. I used the auto configure mic to set it up and have it set to the HD theater mode and it is the best sounding system I have ever owned and have ever heard anywhere. I have not had 1 issue in 3 months.
Excerpt: I returned a Yamaha receiver recently that created a constant buzzing in my speakers and found this deal for a new Sony receiver. After I received it I was blown away by all the features the Yamaha did not have. Unbeatable value.
Great sound and Connectivity, yet disappointing remote and wifi control

Summary: Upgraded form an Onkyo TX-806 receiver. Sound quality far superior and wifi, airplay and bluetooth connectivity live up ot what Sony represented. However the remote control, is a throw back to the 80's and Sony's on-screen AV control app is minimally functional. However a 3rd party android app: "MY AV" is sensational. It is th equivalent to a Logitech 900 remote (which is not supported for this receiver) at a fraction $9.00 of the cost.
The unit does not transmit audio over the HDMI to the second zone.

Summary: I have a TV for the second zone. The unit does not transmit audio over the HDMI to the second zone or the primary zone for that matter. I have a stereo in the main room and it works great. But, going to the second room, NO sound. That's no good.
