Summary: I wanted to post this review here not because I bought this product but I think anyone who buys a SONY product should know about their customer service. I am not a typically a reactive person. I am posting this with the hope that I can save some of you the waste of time and frustration that I have gone through with this company. There are a lot of fine receivers out there. I would suggest that you call customer service before you buy to see how they deal with problems.
Summary: I just didn't come stumbling out of the studio yesterday but got others to gather around and really try to figure out this unit. I have it hooked up to a top of the line Sony Bravia, Sony BT, and quite simply .... the Receiver is junk. If it wasn't the day it was released it is now. Dated Junk. Just how many minutes is one supposed to wait for this unit to resync with a digital source. Can you beat 5 minutes, I can.
Summary: The unit stopped sending a signal to the speakers after 6 months of light use. The worst thing, however, is the service. After having wasted a few weeks of time, they told me that they "could not reproduce the problem". How difficult is it to connect it to a player and a set of speakers? Still having my doubts that my speakers were to blame I ordered another receiver. The speakers are working perfectly.
Summary: After about a month, the receiver started going into protect mode. The volume would not be turned up loud at all, and I would have to turn off the receiver and then power it back on. Picked up a Denon to replace this unit and now the Sony collects dust. I would suggest people google this model and protect mode to get some ideas what they "could" be getting into.
Summary: I have had nothing but headaches with this system. It worked fine for about 3 months. Then, the LG TV that it's connecting to stated - No Signal. I spent numerous time with Sony support on the phone. Conclusion was to have the system repaired. So off it went to Laredo TX to be services (plus shipping cost to me). They had the system for 10 days, then returned it back to me with No Fault found on the work order.
Summary: I ordered a refurb STR-DN1000 from Amazon. The manual was close to indecipherable and in any event was woefully incomplete. The HDMI ports never worked correctly. Then, after 40 days of ownership, the unit flat out died. The stock AM antenna was useless. Then I learned that their proprietary iPod dock was nearly an additional $100. An expensive lesson. When it comes to A/V equipment, you absolutely get what you pay for.
Unit was a Lemon , Sony customer service was worse!

Summary: I purchased this unit on November 27th, 2009 and within 3 months of just using this receiver for nothing more than the occasional movie (surround sound), light music playing, etc. (It has never been cranked up, or abused), it blew 2 integrated circuits (Microchips). After contacting Sony Customer Service, they told me it had to be shipped to the closest repair center (Laredo, TX from Ohio).
Summary: I bought this Sony STR-DN1000 receiver mainly due to its price and features. Unfortunately once I hooked up the receiver I found it to be defective. It would not output video to my TV regardless if I use HDMI or component cables. I connected my Xbox 360 to the receiver with component cables and had a HDMI cable connecting the HDMI output of the receiver to the HDMI input of my TV. No video from the Xbox is shown on the TV.
Summary: Works great for movies, Not so happy listning to music via satalite radio, can not turn on all speakers like I could with my old JVC, music playback is limited to front channel only. Very disapointed with the loud crackle and pop when i turn it off. Bought for the HDMI switching, which does work well. I would return this, if it was not going to be a hassle.
Pros: Good Power
Cons: Difficult To Set Up, Limited Functions, Poor Sound, Snap Crackle Pop pwr dn
Summary: My first unit (shipped directly from Sony) I used Credit Card rewards points was damaged and immediately went into protection. My 2nd unit worked with no problem. The quality over all is poor. No offense here to anyone, but if you are a real basic home theater person who sits with the family and kids and watches tv, or kids DVD's then this receiver will be OK for you.
