Summary: My pioneer receiver I purchased in 1999 worked fine, but with this new HDMI technology, I had to get a new receiver. I tried to get another pioneer, but they were very expensive. I instead made the mistake of getting this receiver on the cheap ($200) and now I know why Sony fell off the technology map, (only good product you can buy from sony is the PS2/3/4). Anyways, more on this product.
Summary: This unit from SONY works great with all inputs. I currently have both old and current technology connected to this unit and everything works well together. Has 4 HDMI and plenty of analog connections, and built in smart technology to decode all current Dolby versions up to 7.1 and allows you to custom tailor you sound to fit all types of movies and music to your personal preferences. Did I mention this unit has plenty of thundering output.
Summary: I got what I expected to get from Sony and more after purchasing this upgrade from my older STR-DE695 6.1, did that only for the HDMI ports. Got 10 more watts per channel and their new ESurround mode rules for music movies and video games. Also like the menu where you can select which speaker pattern you want to use and that the digital optical ports are programmable.
Summary: I like the sound quality, but every time I want to change something I have to go to the manual. Add I have had stereos and sound systems for over 20 years. I would buy another unit if I had to do over. The quality and price are good though.
Summary: I had no luck here. Bd80 blurayer player, latest digital DishNetwork HD set top box, Panny plasma, all HDMI to the 800. Everything works but Bluray playback cuts out randomly every 30 seconds to 2 minutes then resumes again. Called Sony, changed settings, no luck. Reset everything (PITA). Tried moving the HDMI inputs around, no luck, New cables no luck. Bluray audio worked fine through my old component cable Sony amp. The 800 does not play well with my BD80 setup.
Summary: This amp has everything, and great sound, the directions are a little vague but you'll figure everything out, and I don't think to many people by this type of product if there looking for plug and play anyway, that would limit the unit and not give you the adjust-ability that I know I want.
