Annoying "features" make this product insufferable

Summary: While initially satisfied with the product, it turns out that this is the most annoying piece of electronic gear I have ever purchased. I use this receiver to tie everything in my media room together (BluRay, Computer, XBox, etc.). However, if it doesn't receive a sound for 5 minutes, it times out and turns off. Many times, I'm looking at something (i.e. video but no audio) and it just shuts off.
WARNING - Auto Standby "Pass Through" Feature Generates a LOT of Heat When This Unit is Off

Summary: * I've had this receiver for about six months now and after a few aggravations (most of them having to do with the clunky graphic user interface), I'm finally comfortable with what I have. The learning curve on this unit is pretty steep because the manual is NOT customer-friendly. * However, there's something you need to know about one of the most touted features on this receiver.
For the price I give this a 4. Overall I would give it a 3.

Summary: For starters I want to point out what I would consider the 2 most important features for something at this price level. It converts all sources to HDMI so that you can plug in a VCR, non HD cable box, old game system, video camera or whatever else and it will output that source to the HDMI out directly to your TV. This simplifies the installation of a HD TV and reduces the amount of controllers you need.
Excellent value for budget system; video upconversion is a plus

Summary: I bought it because it was the lowest-priced receiver I could find that does video upconversion (highly desired since we have a Wii and a non-HDMI DVD player that I didn't want to pay to replace). I was looking at Denon and Pioneer initially, but to get that feature in those brands you'd have to pay much more. It replaces an 8-year-old Yamaha that finally broke. It is perfect for my simple living room setup with two Klipsch bookshelf speakers.
Summary: The sound is extraordinary! I have it coupled with JBL Century studio monitors, JBL center channel enclosure, JBL bookshelf speakers for rear surround, and a JBL 300W 12" sub woofer. I love the auto calibration with include mic. It puts itself through the paces and tunes the system based on speaker output and placement. Genius! All my components are Sony except for the DirecTV box.
Summary: i have had this receiver for about a yr now, and it works great. the auto shut down is nice but gets annoying if u pause a movie or leave a game at a main menu or something and walk away for 15mins or so, it shuts down if not in use. I am sure u can change that setting but havent gotten that far yet. i bought this to replace my aging Sony, which didnt have any HDMI ports. i now run HDMI for all my equipment. I am not big into all the specs and sound stuff.
Summary: excellent product. easy to set up. beautiful sound. This receiver makes movies come alive. The surround sound is so dynamic and clear. The only negative is that a powered sub woofer was required and the instructions did not say that. Otherwise a very excellent item. Now I have only had it for 2 weeks so I wait and see how long it will last.
STR-DH520, No Analog To HDMI 1080p/i Conversion Needed On This Unit
12 April 2013
Summary: I started to return my new STR-DH520 7.1, because I wanted to play just about all my movies and HD TV episodes in Dolby Digital 7.1 audio surround sound ... My STR-DH520 would auto change to "LPCM 48" and would not change back to Dolby Digital 7.1 audio .... So I finally found a fix for the "LPCM 48" bug .... "LPCM 48" Bug Fix: Go To Amp menu->HDMI->Ctrl HDMI->Off Amp menu->HDMI->Passthrough->Off Amp menu->HDMI->Audioout->AMP instead of AMP+TV.
