Pros: I am happy I bought this receiver. This is the nicest receiver I have ever owned. Great value for the money. It was properly packaged. No dents, scratches, no marks of any kind. Set up was easy. I run all my peripherals thru the HDMI ports and I love the sound output. Much better than my 20 year old Pioneer. My 30 day warranty is almost up and I have the utmost confidence this receiver will last me for years.
Pros: Poorly packaged. On arrival the box had damage. Opening the box proved that damage was on the receiver it's self. Unit works great tho. Put it thru it's paces, pretty much what I wanted it for. Other than the dent from shipping. It's a great unit. It's in a cabinet so the dent is really not a problem for me. Sounds fantastic compared to my 20 yr old TEAC. Which by the way is still preforming very well to be 20. Hope to get the same kind of service out of this one.
Cons: Packaging needs to be improved. If it had been packaged right., it wouldn't have a dent. Looks like something fell on top of the box & damaged the housing of the unit. UPS must have dropped something on it.
Summary: Refurbished unit was very poorly packed and it very likely the reason it was damaged so severly in shipment. Materials protecting the contents of the package consisted of broken bits of Styrofoam wedged here and there - all of which were totally inadequate for protection in shipment. This was not shipped in the original box but a standard plain brown cardboard box. I would avoid this item at all costs.
Pros: Unable to provide information since units was too damaged to even attempt connection. Parts were literally falling off and rattling inside the receiver
Cons: Unable to provide product evaluation information - see other thoughts
Summary: There are always things that a fussy electronics user (as in yours truly) would do differently; but, that aside, this thing is great. Lots of functions and lots of usage possibilities make for a bit of a learning curve, but once I settled in on what I wanted, I really started to appreciate the receiver. In fact, there were a couple of features that disappointmented me, and then I discovered settings that resolved what I didn't like.
Summary: If you have a TV installed on your wall and are trying to eliminate all the wiring clutter to/from your TV, consider this receiver. It runs cool and provides more than enough power to supply my surround sound system.
Summary: Needed a good cheap good receiver and this seems to do the trick. Im overseas so far i've only received the receiver and one Pioneer SP-FS52-LR Andrew Jones Designed Floor standing Loudspeaker. Even with just the one speaker it sounds great. The only thing I wish this receiver had was a aux input. I dont have a ipod and id like to play music from my S4, thats the reason for the 4 star rating.
The STR-DH540 did not accept my iPOD via USB connection

Summary: When I tried to connect my iPod, using the USB connection, it never completed "reading" the iPod. Hence, I had to connect the IPOD using RCA cables. Note, when the RCA cables were connected, the USB cable could be used to charge the iPod while playing. The audio features are OK.
