Summary: I've own my STR-DE945 for well over 10 years. Lots of optional gear that I loved. 110 watts per channel Dolby Digital making every watt count. This unit has definitively help piss off alot of neighbors over the years. On the sad side, the A and B speaker switch gave up about a year ago so had stop using the b side $75 fix. Its survived a power surge and still working. But I'm in the market to upgrade.
Summary: I bought this receiver with the sole purpose of using it for surround sound and I'm more than pleased with the performance. Lots of power and clear sound. I'm using PSB Stratus speakers. The tower speakers are PSB Stratus Silvers (didn't want the golds cause I wasn't interested in bi-amping the speakers. I understand some do not like the remote, but all my components are Sony and I find I just select whichever component and the remote does everything with ease.
Summary: This receiver is everything I was looking for. 5.1 surround is just fine with me. I didn't want/need the HDMI inputs, it has gobs of optical inputs, which works just fine and allows me to have the setup be "parallel" to the TV audio so that when the wife or I want to watch basic TV, we don't have to go through the hassle of powering up the surround. Yet, it's there and sounds great when we want the theater for a movie.
Summary: I've had a STR-DE945 since 9/2000. Sadly, my old unit was damaged in a move. The one I bidded on is just as excelent as my old unit. I got the 2009 updated cousin to the STR-DE945 and it didn't come close to the STR-DE945. Others may disagree, but minus the HDMI inputs, this unit remains Sony's best. Ease of operation,, multi control speaker control, you name it. I love it and I've looked at other 5.1 units, but the STR-DE945 blows the others away.
Summary: I bought this unit to enjoy Dolby digital sound from my DVD player, had a Pro-logic set up prior. For the first 8 or 9 months I was not too happy mainly due to the remote. Not very user friendly esp. if your gear isnt mostly Sony. Dim remote display, necessity to scroll too much etc. It does have a VERY extensive array of sound fields and the ability to set up speaker equalization and levels.
Summary: I performed some work for a local pawn shop and as is our usual arrangement I was offered either mechandise or cash for the work. The shop had a Sony STR-DE945 on the shelf listed for $150. I chose that. The remote for it is missing but most all the features are available from the front panel, and I can change the input and volume from my TV's universal remote control.
