Summary: I bought this because the price was right. I owned it 5 years and never figured out how this remote is supposed to work nor could I use the goofy adjustments. Had a sub-woofer hooked up and it never made a sound. It is about as good as an Emerson stereo or one of those old Electrophonics. The sound is *meh*. This unit imbues the music with no soul, no balls or even ovaries. It is just loud and flat.
Summary: The Sony STR DE698 B 7.1 Channel Receiver bought is awesome and is was on time. I love the Sony STR DE698 B 7.1 Channel Receiver if I did not own it and had not bought it from this vender no ebay my life would not have been complete. No im ready to go blasting tunes all the way to the big house.
Summary: This unit has everything you expect from a 100 x 7. I have this system hooked to 7 speakers in a 30 x 25 living room. The sound from this unit made my TV seem too small. Sound quality is excellent for the level unit this is. I have not had a chance to hook up a subwoofer yet, but I am sure it will be equally as room filling. PERFECT FOR A GOOD CHEAP 7.1 SURROUND UNIT!!!!
Summary: This is an awsome reciever!!! It replace my 10 year old Sony Reciever, which I used atleast eight hours a day. Wow, how things have changed with recievers, but for the better. One of the great thing about this reciever is th Auto Calibration, which automatically sets up the surround sound (like distance of each speaker from reciever for instance? Even with all the plugs on the back it was easy setting/hooking up the reciever and every plug is well marker.
Summary: My old system died on me so I went surfing the web to see what I could find as a replacment unit. I read all of the on line reports I could find and then hit Ebay to see if they had the unit. They did and I got the Sony DE698 7.1 channels system for a great price. My first words on setup are, Read The Book First on how to set the system up, it will go a lot easer for you. Use or make up banana jacks for ease of installing the speakers.
Summary: This was purchased to replace a much more costly Harman Kardon 5.1 receiver, which I found had a weak FM tuner and difficult to configure surround settings. The Sony has been a pleasant surprise; good FM, more than adequate power and the 7.1 surround is quite and improvement over the 5.1. The remote is even user friendly (though I use a Sony touch screen universal).
Summary: The price looked right, but as others have mentioned this receiver has: *a poor layout for inputs, *a terrible manual, *a difficult remote, Sony is coasting on their name with this one. In addition, after a period of full, normal operation the unit began to go into "Protect" mode...
Summary: If you need to drive your 7.1 surround speakers, this SONY does a nice job. It is not the best out there, but it may very well be the best one for the money. All video sources are "upconverted" to S-VIDEO to send them all to your TV with one cable. It took a little while to figure out which surround modes sounded best and how to seperatly adjust the volume on the surrounds, but it does great when properly tweeked. The ProLogic-II modes do great on movies and games.
