Sony STR DE685 5.1 Channel 500 Watt Receiver Delivers
10 July 2013
Summary: As an older unit, it delivers an excellent surround sound experience and has the component connections for my existing equipment (some very outdated)and surround sound speaker array. Also, Sony has always proven to be of the highest quality and longevity. Years ago, I would not have been able this Sony Receiver; however, I was lucky enough to find what I needed as such a low cost. I'm a happy camper ...
Summary: The SONY STR DE685 500 watt receiver does it all. Inputs and outputs for everey conceivable equipment configuration. Excellent sound reproduction that can be shaped to your liking in a variety of ways; some automatic, some manual. What I dislike about it is that the manual was poorly translated, likely from Japanese. It is NOT clear nor very understandable. While this receiver has numerous adjustments, making them is NOT intuitive. It is NOT "user friendly.
Summary: I love that it has so many input/output options available and that the setup is not difficult. I bought it because my old Technics would go to protection whenever I had my PC hooked up to my system, this one does not and it puts out more power.
Summary: The Sony STR-DE685 is a fine receiver for the money. Lots of bells and whistles. Be careful, because it has a great THD rating in stereo, but only so-so with all 5 channels driven. Other companies do the same thing. I really like the features and the remote is probably the best in the business, despite the fact that the keys are small. All in all I liked it so much that when it came time to buy a second one, I bought a STR-DE985, which is similar, but with better specs.
Summary: I have had this reveiver for three months now and love it. I am very pleased and have not had the audio delay problem mentioned in the other review. I would highly recommend this product. Nice versitility - Tons of bells and whistles.
Summary: For the price, this unit does everything I wanted it to, in terms of sound and features. I had hoped that composite video inputs could be output via the s-video out, but I can accept the fact that I'd have to pay more for this feature. However, I'm in the process of returning this unit for one single reason: there is a fairly obvious delay in the audio output.
