Summary: I bought this receiver just over a year ago, and would advise anyone who's tempted to buy it, to stay away. The Airplay feature and the HDMI inputs were the main selling points for me. Airplay was always spotty, with playback that would cut out often, no matter how close my phone was and irrespective of strength of wifi signal. The HDMI part totally died one day about 10 months in, and I tried everything to get it working again, including factory reset.
Summary: It wouldn't output HDMI to my Viewsonic PJD5533 projector. Everything worked fine connected directly to projector but not through the receiver. I even upgraded to a Pioneer VSX-523 thinking it might work better since it's a year newer but it had a similar problems. I eventually switched to an Onkyo and everything worked fine.
Summary: Need to push volume to 60-70% of max to get some "talking" level sound volume (all inputs, including tuner). Not a speaker problem, as my old receiver with only half the output power of the Pioneer would reach the same volume level at only 10% of max. I tried tweaking a few things via Home Menu with no success. Also, sound was lacking bass and clarity. Probably a bad unit, but even apart from the obvious flaw of this one, I will not replace it with the same unit.
Major flaw with receiver and terrible customer service

Summary: I purchased the VSX-822 in April and was going to use it with my outdoor entertainment center. I received the product and had my local AV contractor install it about 2 months later after I purchased everything else I needed. Upon installation of the receiver we knew something was wrong. We couldn't get the video input or audio output to work so I called Pioneer customer service.
Summary: This thing is a nightmare, Pioneer could not build a receiver that was "plug and play" so they built this thing, Gee were to begin, first you cannot adjust the bass or treble without programing it and I have yet to figure that out, the remote is as complicated as the stereo and you can forget using the HDMI cables to push the sound from your flat screen through this extremely complicated marvel of engineering noooo you have to load a disk in your lap top that is supposed...
Summary: !!!!!WARNING!!!!! system works great but a month later it stopped working out of nowhere. !!!!warning!!!pioneer does not accept warranty from them..there not a licenced dealer..so beware!!!you will be just out off luck.
Either I got a lemon or this is the worst device around!

Summary: After wasting a day and a half trying to get this device to work the only sound I managed to get out of my attached speakers was the testing tones. Network feature did not work (despite over 3 hours of futzing with DHCP and then manually setting various IP addresses, etc.) and the TV audio input via HDMI ARC did not work (no explanation for that really - I even bought a new HDMI cable as Pioneer thought maybe my cable was HDMI 1.3 which does not support ARC).
Summary: I returned this because I got no sound through it. The video switching worked. It was frustrating because there were a lot of wires to connect to speakers (and then disconnect and reconnect to my old receiver). It was a learning experience to find Pioneer's technical manuals online to be sure it was just some setup detail I did not know. I was impressed how well Amazon's return process worked!
