Summary: I've been very happy with this receiver since I bought it. Everything has functioned very nicely, good sound, just worked. Exactly one month after the warranty expired, the HDMI video section died. Kaput. I've never had a Pioneer product die after just two years. The plasma that is connected to the receiver is over 7 years old and my Pioneer laserdisc player is over 20 years old with no problems.
Summary: I bought this receiver to upgrade from a Pioneer VSX-516 after purchasing a new Blu-ray player, mainly for the HDMI and True HD and Master DTS features. Power wise it was a disappointment; it didn't even match the punch of VSX-516. Additionally, my unit ran hotter than Hades. Some say there was a fan in this thing, so I have to wonder if mine was broken. Fortunately, the shelf I put it in allowed for two additional computer cooling fans, which I put on top of it.
Summary: I ordered one of these and ended up returning it because I could not get any HDMI video/audio to work. My original purchase was from the "Amazon Warehouse Deals" department which are used items. I figured it was not tested correctly and was busted so I returned it. I then decided to order it new (costing me an extra $50). Once I got it I hooked it up and the same thing happened. For the life of me I could not get HDMI to work.
Summary: Very poor manual, it does not even mentioned have to use component cables for you to see the GUI/OSD. The receiver was in its original box but placed in a bigger box without any stuffing or padding. It was bouncing around and it might be the cause of the unknown deffect/s. After spending many hours and consulted with Pioneer's customer service, there was unresolvable problem with the HDMI connections and had to return back to Amazon.
Summary: I was greatly surprised at the effort we had to spend to get this receiver to function. The instructions that come with it are confusing and tedious. They keep telling you to go to another page to find how to hook something up. It has defaults that do not allow you to change some settings. I had to ask for some help with this from a neighbor who does this for a living..... he was at my house for 4 hours trying to set this thing up.
Summary: In a nutshell: sounds great, amazingly complex to set up and operate, unintuitive controls and some minor things that just don't work. For example the iPod connection simply didn't work, and my emails to the company went un-returned. I also run my set-top box through it, and while it works it does so only after a good deal of fiddling. I am happy about the sound quality, but wish I did a bit more research and found a product better thought through.
Summary: I replaced a Pioneer VSX-1016TXV-K 7.1 Channel Audio/Video Receiver with this one Mainly because of the HDMI, loseless sound and familiarity with Pioneer. My old receiver was only 2.5 years old. I've only had it a couple of days but some things I'm noticing--- ---When playing music I noticed a sound coming from the receiver,,,it was a fan turning on and although it was not noticeable during loud music, during soft music I definitely noticed it.
