Summary: hdmi audio went out completely during the break from 5.1 sound to stereo of a commercial. Just pop and gone...no more audio over hdmi. Only used it two months too. Should definitely be built better i would think. Guess its warranty service for me now...what a pain.
Summary: I installed this receiver several weeks ago and I am very happy with it's performance and capabilities. Lot's of features and excellent sound and video qualities. Consulting the manual is essential. Pioneer customer service is helpful but not very competent. The Auto MCACC system made setting up my surround system very easy. So far I love this product from Pioneer and I got a very good price for it from Amazon ($548).
Summary: *** Updated information *** I still give this receiver 5 stars across the board. we since set the front speakers to large instead of small and found that it does improve the sound in the upper bass and midrange giving it more warmth. It is definitely a fuller sound. I wanted to find an on line manual for the VSX-9040TXH so looked at the Pioneer site but didn't find it.
Summary: 2012/8/21 Update This receiver is still working fantastically almost 2 and a half years later. I only use an antennae for OTA HD channels, and it decodes Dolby Digital from that signal. I have since upgraded my TV to a 60" LED TV, and have a home theater computer in place with a Sapphire HD 6870 for gaming and movie watching. This receiver takes the format perfectly, playing back audio and sending 1080P video to the HDTV.
Summary: I just received my Pioneer VSX-9040 and hooked it up to my new Energy Take Classic mini-speakers and ESW-V8 subwoofer. I'm very pleased with this receiver. It's going to take me some time to dial in the sound the way I want it. The microphone calibration worked well, but I'm still tweeking with the sound and getting accustomed to the sound options and remote. I did a lot of research before this purchase. This unit is a diamond in the rough and well worth the money.
Summary: T carefully organized all of the necessary wires before starting the connection process. Also, I made all of the connnections and tested them before I put the Receiver in the Cabinent. Everything worked fine, except for Netflix Streaming. I did not get any sound. After calling Pioneer (receiver), Sony (BluRay Player), and Netflix. I got a run around from Sony and Netflix. The Pioneer technician said that Pioneer had not expereinced the problem.
Summary: Bought this one to replace my old Yamaha. Have tried the Onkyo HT-RC160 and Pioneer VSX919AHK. Both are too complicated to set up and did not like the high temperature. The sound and video are better than aforementioned units. Very satisfy with this receiver.
Summary: This unit is great for the price. Audio wise the low THD is quite nice and the ability to bi-amp your speakers is truly a plus. The auto setup does a great job, and is fairly accurate as I checked it with my RTA and SPL meter. Auto volume leveling is a nice feature to have, although purists wont want to use it. There are plenty of decoding options however for entry-level THX this is right on the money. Video is fine the up-scaling works well.
Summary: I needed to replace my Onkyo to upgrade and benefit from a HDMI connection. The Pioneer offers so much more than just an improved sound. The software identified some wiring problems in some of my ceiling speakers. The flexibility to use THX, HD sound, and many others are great features. I had been shopping Yamaha and Onkyo. For the price and performance, it is hard to beat the Pioneer 9040 7-channel.
Summary: I have only one regret on buying the Pioneer VSX-9040TXH AV receiver: that I didn't buy it sooner. I love music and I have never heard such beautiful sound on anyone's home system. Right out of the box (without using it's wonderful automatic system of balancing the speakers) the sound was spatial, unbelievably clear and with a depth I have not heard. The most delicate sounds sounds were clearly audible while there was a dimensionality that was just a joy to hear.
