Summary: This receiver is great. It was bought used, but everything was in great shape. All functions that i wanted worked as advertized. I am still working with various surround sound modes, and still have alot to learn about this receiver. Even though it is discontinued, it will last me quite a while.
Summary: I was looking to update to a receiver that had HDMI inputs and was on a bit of a budget. Just like the other reviews say this is an Pioneer Elite level receiver without the Elite label or price. For those that don't know, the "Discrete" power source it has is the difference between average and excellent when it comes to receivers. 110 watts from a lower tiered Pioneer and one with discrete channels are very different.
Summary: Warning!! Unless you want to spend hours tweaking this receiver to get simple TV, avoid it. I bought two of these receivers three years ago. This product is exceptionally complex and probably targets avid AV buffs who do not mind spending hours to make it work. To start with, the manual is unreadable. Whenever you want to set some function, the manual will start with one section that refers to another section that sends you to yet another section.
Pioneer VSX-9040TXH 110 Watt x 7 Direct Energy Amplification Receiver (Black)
12 January 2012
Summary: Bought this unit exactly 2 years ago January 2010. So far I am very pleased with this Pioneer I have no problems what so ever for 2 years. I am using this together with my Panasonic V series 54" TV and Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home Theater System with 2 additional Energy spekers to make it a 7.1 system
Summary: I purchased this receiver in the spring of 2010. It has conistently had problems. It drops the cable video signal periodically. When watching a cable TV program, it will drop the video signal for a split scond and cause the tv screen to go black. It does it often enough that it becomes somewhat irritating. It also shuts down if the audio cables are bumped when moving the receiver in or out of the entertainment center.
Summary: hdmi audio went out completely during the break from 5.1 sound to stereo of a commercial. Just pop and gone...no more audio over hdmi. Only used it two months too. Should definitely be built better i would think. Guess its warranty service for me now...what a pain.
Summary: I installed this receiver several weeks ago and I am very happy with it's performance and capabilities. Lot's of features and excellent sound and video qualities. Consulting the manual is essential. Pioneer customer service is helpful but not very competent. The Auto MCACC system made setting up my surround system very easy. So far I love this product from Pioneer and I got a very good price for it from Amazon ($548).
Summary: *** Updated information *** I still give this receiver 5 stars across the board. we since set the front speakers to large instead of small and found that it does improve the sound in the upper bass and midrange giving it more warmth. It is definitely a fuller sound. I wanted to find an on line manual for the VSX-9040TXH so looked at the Pioneer site but didn't find it.
Summary: 2012/8/21 Update This receiver is still working fantastically almost 2 and a half years later. I only use an antennae for OTA HD channels, and it decodes Dolby Digital from that signal. I have since upgraded my TV to a 60" LED TV, and have a home theater computer in place with a Sapphire HD 6870 for gaming and movie watching. This receiver takes the format perfectly, playing back audio and sending 1080P video to the HDTV.
