Summary: Purchased this as my first 5.1 HDMI system. It interacts with my Samsung HDTV, DISH receiver and Blu Ray player well. Several connections are required and will take a while to get everything hooked up. Screen menu (CD, DVD, DVR, TV/SAT, etc) does not exactly match the connections on the back. For example, my Satellite TV uses the DVR setting vs TV/Sat (I do not have a DVR yet.
Good sound-- Instructions are a bear for a dummy like me
26 January 2013
Summary: Nice looking piece of equipment, but takes a magnifying glass and some effort when looking over the set-up instructions (think about what the guy said in the movie "Beetlejuice"--reads like stereo instructions)--there are also some issues with the set-up in that you need to have the RCA jacks in to access the set up on your TV--you can't use HD cables to do this.
Summary: overall this is a very good one. however i still give it 4 stars because if you want to setup the thing you still need to plug it with old av cable and it wont appear through HDMI though we are in 21th centuries!!!
Summary: right off the bat i will say that it looks awesome..i love the glossy look. next i will say that set up isnt anywhere near as hard as the reviews say. it took me 5 mins to take apart my old receiver and put in the new. then it took 5 mins to let the audio calibration mic do its test tones and stuff and then your ready to listen to your audio connected devices. pros: i love the mic. does good.
Summary: For the price paid ($200), the Pioneer VSX-821 receiver is an excellent bargain. Settings are simple via an on screen menu, and the features provided are more than adequate to meet the needs of any household looking for a surround sound experience and other audio applications. Highly recommended!
Summary: As I did my research I concluded that this receiver is the best out there for the money. That conclusion has been validated as I have used it. It has a lot of features, and does what it was intended to do. I am pleased with it's performance. The only downsides are the criptic and obtuse owner's manual that is very hard to make sense of. I gave up and just fiddled with it until I could figure it our on my own.
Summary: Makes the room come alive with the surround speakers I already have. The quirks involve setup but this is not something I do everyday so its no big deal. For example, my subwoofer was not being used. Finally discovered (it is buried in the manual) that if the receiver 'thinks' you have large speakers it sends no signal to the subwoofer. When I set it to 'small' speakers everything was fine. As has been mentioned in other reviews, you view many settings on your TV screen.
Summary: I had the same Pioneer Home Theater system just a much older model (almost 10 years older!) before I bought this one to replace it (lost it in the divorce!). This unit works just as well and sounds GREAT!! I am thrilled to have all of the more modern 2011 conveniences of multiple HDMI ports, RDY for my DVD player, a USB port with ipod controls, etc. that my old unit was to dated for. Very happy so far!
